Sadly, I don't have the attire, but it looks like GREAT fun.

Loved the top hat guy explaining "that's what I want to!" until he got to privatizing first responders...tee hee.

58. Response for that
He could've said "What are you, some kind of socialist sympathizer?" when the woman objected to his idea of privatizing police, fire, etc.

I would really be shoving these ideas back into the face of the mindless repig drones if I went to the trouble of dressing up like this. I would also carry a SERIOUS, LARGE (prop) weapon. If the group lives in a city with movie-making vendors, they could get a rocket launcher or other kind of exotic weapon, and then carry a sign saying "I'm a billionaire. I can afford tanks & ICBMs. Why can't I have them?"

21. Care with statistics
This video has a couple of problems with it related to statistics that are presented.

(1) The period that was used for corporate profits was very carefully selected. Anytime you look at profits starting with the bottom of one recession until the top of an expansion they are going to look large for most if not all industries. If we combined those numbers with losses from the recent recession and adjusted for inflation the numbers would look a lot different.

(2) The person who made this video used household income for their statistics. Household numbers can be very misleading. Per capita income is a much better indicator. Real per capita income growth (i.e. adjusted for inflation) during the 2000s compares very favorably to other decades going back to World War II.

(3) When analyzing profits one must compare this to the amount of money invested. Real aggregate investment was up during the 2000s. One would naturally expect profits to be up as well. The rate of return on investments was in line with what has been seen since World War II.

- We all benefit from investments
- The profits represent a return on investment to retirement savings teachers, nurses, police officers, and other workers and generates retirement income.

Consider what generates profits in a free market (i.e. voluntary exchange).

(1) Producing goods and services that are desired by consumers and offered at prices consumers are willing to pay. That is to say that consumers felt they were better off with the goods and services they purchased than the money they spent.

(2) Finding ways to produce these goods and services at a lower cost by applying innovation, technology, and risking capital.

That is to say that profits are not a bad thing. They are a sign that companies are satisfying consumers and finding an efficient way to do so.

30. The Basic Assumption that
our health care system is based upon is: profit from sickness and death. That is WRONG....morally and every other way. We are the only developed nation that does this.

Do I have to go to Cuba to get health care? Shit.

And when did citizens become consumers?

Go read Marx....and I don't mean Groucho. The American Empire is in decline...we are going to witness its demise. I don't think any nation, not even China, can overcome what man has done to Planet Earth. Mother Nature is gonna kick some major ass....and profits are not edible.

Welcome to DU, I think.

36. Very biased and superficial analysis
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 11:29 PM by ProudDad
of "statistics" about a doomed, failed Ponzi scheme laughingly called an "economy".

And when has there EVER been a "free market"? Surely not here, not now, not ever...

As for household income -- You're making the mistake... During the 2000s the numbers would ONLY compare favorably with the past if you take 2 facts into account:

1) The rich got richer and richer at a much higher rate then the other 92%

2) If you lump all classes of society together than your #2 may be numerically correct. However if you analyze by income level you find that for everyone except the top 5% income has either stagnated or dropped over the 2000s.

What generates profits is the exploitation by the "owner" classes of excess wealth produced by the workers. "Voluntary exchange" has NOTHING to do with it. For most people, most purchases are anything but "voluntary".

Profits are NOT necessarily a "sign that companies are satisfying customers" they are a sign that corporations are finding a way to widen the difference between their costs and their income. lately outsourcing, playing games with the books, creating artificial "bubbles" like the dot-bombs and the housing bubbles, charging usurious fees, charges and interest, killing people by denying them health care -- that's how "profits are made" is USAmerika...

-----

On edit, thanks for wasting 4 minutes of my time on your bullshit libertarian talking points...

43.  Profits are not a bad thing, people should be able to make a living, BUT
CEOs are making a killing, on the ills of others. And how do they maintain their profits? By the indentured servitude of others.
Capitalism sucks. It is a system that is doomed to failure, because it implies that there are infinite resources. Once one realizes that there are finite resources, that everyone on the planet should share, one realizes that Capitalism is NOT the answer!

31. k&r point of trivia i thought was interesting on billionaires for bush & how it started:
The organization had first been founded by Andrew Boyd as "Billionaires for Forbes", but Forbes left the 2000 race for the Republican Presidential nomination early due to a lack of adequate voter support. In 1999, Billionaires were present as Steve Forbes announced his candidacy for President and jeered him as he signed a flat tax pledge in New Hampshire.<2> The Billionaire Manual describes the action:

They wore conservative jackets and ties (but no bowler hats, etc.) and carried innocuous signs such as "Run, Steve, Run." Happy to have grass-roots support, the Forbes handlers (who believed the Billionaires were students from a nearby business school) placed them in front of the cameras, very near to the podium from which Forbes was speaking. However, each of their signs had another sign behind it. And behind their banner (which read "Forbes 2000: He wants YOU to win") was another banner, waiting. At the most dramatic moment of his announcement, the Billionaires flipped their signs, and pulled away the large banner to reveal one which read: "Billionaires for Forbes: Because Inequality isn’t Growing Fast Enough." The Billionaires started chanting "Let workers pay the tax so investors can relax!" and other slogans. Forbes and his handlers were completely thrown off, a little tussle ensued, and the Billionaires were pushed off to the side away from the cameras. Not wanting to miss the action, half the TV crews left the Forbes speech to cover the Billionaires. The action got lots of coverage.

32. Wow. How many of those dumbasses had no idea that they were being used as entertainment?
I can't believe what a huge percentage of "conservatives" are completely blind to satire and irony.
This reminds me of the study which concluded that many conservatives see Stephen Colbert as one of them and not a progressive that is making fun of them.

I would argue that the morons have already been around - after all Timothy McVeigh was of their ilk.

My argument is that it's not the morons, it's the failure of the Democratic Party leadership now in control (less of course the Progressive Caucus) who are using the morons as a pretext for their failure to act.
