He basically agrees with Rachel's hypothesis that the Right Wing's rhetoric is creating a dangerous atmosphere for the president & states that the Secret Service could widen the security boundary around the president to stop these "irresponsible stunts".

1. Free speech zones
Bush started the precedent. I suggest we use it.

4. There were used by a lot of people in power. They were all over universities before
the last round of political conventions. In some schools they remain in place

2. It occurs to me these folks want to be arrested or have their weapons confiscated
So that they can show that Obama really really does want to take away their guns.

It's standard tactic 101 for political activists, whether left or right, to goad the authorities into being repressive in order to prove a political point.

The problem in this case is that it is extremely dangerous.

I freaking hate guns. I hate the little paranoid people who feel they need to brandish them. Tell them to get some Viagra if they are ashamed of their small, ineffectual sexual organs. Guns are no substitute.

3. Glad to see somone pointing out the tactics are not unique to the right
We used the many of the same thing in our early years. We loved it then . Now that we run things, the universities in my case, we abhor protest and want it suppressed. Are aborted fetuses all that different than Vietnam War causalities? *sigh*

5. right off hand, I would say brandishing firearms by people who claim Obama is the moral equivalent
of Hitler carries an implied threat incomparable to the presence of war casualties or even aborted fetuses.

It is a bit disingenuous to compare other publicity seeking antics by either left or right to the presence of loaded firearms by fanatical haters of the President at a public appearance of the President.

19. But now that they have called attention to themselves
Would you want to have them as a co-worker? an employee? someone with your company logo on their shirt when they meet the public?

I don't think these people have run out their 15 minutes of fame; they probably want as much attention as McVeigh, Koresh, Klebold, and others have gotten.

7. have republicans responded to this?
This seems to me a very obvious attempt to get the SS to arrest or confiscate guns or whatever and then they can scream their hate rhetoric about Obama and the second amendment. I think Republicans need to be asked about this, such as McCain, etc... this is also an obvious attempt to intimidate, not only Obama but all of us.

9. You know what... I'm just fucking tired of this. (rant on)
I know that there are a number of 2nd amendment gun nuts here at DU.

But this is brain dead.

If the tree of liberty has to be watered with the blood of patriots and tyrants...

I vote we start with these "patriots". Bush had a doctrine of preemptive war against people who had done nothing to us, and those poor bastards didn't even HAVE the weapons we said justified our shiny new doctrine. These idiots HAVE weapons, brought them to the "fight" (where they know tempers are running a bit hot, but where they also know our President is appearing and there are families and children present).

You want to own guns, fine. You want to shoot intruders in your home. fine. You want to hunt, go for it. But TAKING a gun to an event where you know there is going to be the best security known on the planet is just nuts. There isn't a valid reason for it other than "because the law says I can". You aren't adding to the security, you are subtracting. For each asshole that shows up with a gun, some number of law enforcement and Secret Service agents are now spending their time watching them. That means fewer agents and law enforcement are watching for the people that AREN'T openly wearing their guns. The real potential assassins. And you KNOW that the "lone wolf" assholes are paying attention to this. Today it was somewhere between 12 to 15 people "armed" that the protection detail HAS to watch. Last time it was one. Next time it might be 40 or 50.

Apparently the Secret Service already has the authority (in law) to exclude armed citizens from a defined perimeter. Such exclusions for the safety of the President and any SS protectee are allowed by the courts. Lets make the perimeter much, much bigger. Like thousands of yards from the President. Anyone sporting a weapon within the exclusion zone is to be treated as a potential assassin.

The real reason these assholes are bringing the guns is to intimidate. And I'm fucking tired of it. Let's declare open season on idiots... hopefully before they have a chance to breed... or "accidentally" get someone killed.

OK, rant off.

14. despite the "gun zone" being a great idea, to embarrass them & so they can watch them clearly,
they DISTRACT the SS from protecting the president!!! Therefore, this implied threat of force, and the distraction they bring, they should be forced to stand in a zone that is protected by 1 person with a machine gun pointing at them! Ok Ok, then just force them to be restricted from being too close to the president and therefore becomes a distraction!

15. Couldn't the 'gun zone' be protected by SWAT?
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 03:48 AM by Turborama
I don't know how Obama's security is handled but surely SWAT could take care of the circumference of the gun zone's perimeter while SS focus on its radius? Just a thought. Might be something that's going on already, for all I know.

BTW I totally agree that the Secret Service need to have minimal distractions, that's why keeping these idiotic stunts as far away from the president as possible seems like a good idea.

18. Something needs to be done about this
It is absolutely ridiculous that anyone should be able to bring firearms anywhere near POTUS.

BTW, Mr. Turborama...I have been trying to get in touch with you!
