New Pro-Reform Ad: “There Are REAL Death Panels In America”

Americans United for Change, the labor-backed group allied with the White House, is going up with this new ad seizing on the “death panel” chatter to argue that the insurance companies constitute “real death panels in America”:

The spot, which will run on national cable in a five-figure buy, dovetails with the new White House effort to train public anger on the insurance companies in the reform push. There’s no mention of the public option, however.

Note the cameo appearance by Michele Bachmann on the left of the screen. One can only hope that her inclusion suggests that her oddball antics are slowly turning her into a nationally-recognized figure…

1. Exactamundo, straight to the point right on target....

I'm sure most small buinesses and even some large ones can get behind this ad as once healh insurance companies are done they hike prices later. Hold it in check while there's a chance.

2. Let's see if CNN agrees to run this one.
They rejected the group's last ad. Anyone who wants to sign the petition to CNN or donate to Americans United for Change should go here.

3. It's kind of crazy how they support one industry when clearly it's not known for any generosity..

to their customers. If their industry is held to account the extreme profits will circulate in society more with customer savings and they'll most likely get advertising via other business who are likely more generous. No other industry or business should by logic owe health insurance companies any loyalty as they are taking them for a ride too. Once the savings get out there products bought and more people hired to buy them, insurance reform with robust public option is the only way.

4. YES! But quite not hard-hitting enough. Fine tune it.
Nice post. Basically agree with approach. Yet here is a range of PR
responses which may be calibrated.

I think the above is still too mild. The insurance PR shock troops pulled
no punches in LYING about health care reform, demonizing those advocating for it,
conducting their bad-faith politics with their paid whores in the same despicable
way that they have used to extort and privatize 1/3 of the US economy at the
expense of the health and well being of our nation. This is the model that has allowed
non-democratic big corporations with sole purpose of concentrating POWER and WEALTH
to transcend and threaten our democratic institutions and a government organized not for
CONCENTRATING WEALTH but for the benefit of the PEOPLE and their society.

I am no opponent of "free enterprise" but an advocate of balancing what has gone horribly
wrong in the capitalist system due to monopoly abuses, corruption of democratic process,
and corrosion of the rule of law. Although this is about getting HEALTH CARE reform, that
needs to be the focus here, but this issue is WAY BIGGER than just that, it is STRUCTURAL.

These INSURANCE people are not citizens of a world, they stand as outlaws of society because
they abuse their power and wealth. They may see themselves as not evil, just making money, playing
the game, playing it hard and well, subject to forces beyond their control. But in the end they
should be commanded by their humanity, and their failings have been beyond evident. (Some (like Potter)
have decided to switch sides, let us wish him well and hope he finds the humanity he now seeks after
expending so much of his life on the other side of darkness.

We don't need to go as hyperbolic on it as they have done recently, but we do not need to lose
sight of the OUTRAGE we are rightly feeling. We can still be hostile to their conduct, expose
their lies and hypocrisy, do it fairly, honestly, and

The real story: "INSURANCE COMPANY DEATH PANELS"
How Obscene Health Insurance Profits Are Really Made.

5. Is it a 30-second ad?
Even bumping it up to 45 seconds would allow for improvement. In my (admittedly lay) opinion, they should not just show Linda Peeno testifying before Congress but, at some point, a voiceover should state explicitly that it's the insurance companies that are denying life-saving medical treatment, EVERY SINGLE DAY. Their ignorance imperils all of us, and THAT is what is so entirely unacceptable about this very small but very vocal and very well funded minority attempting to hijack reform.

7. No, I agree with the ad itself. I'm looking a bit beyond it.
I'm no PR expert, decidedly not. Just thinking about the situation.

Networks will not run ads as hard hitting as I am advocating,
too much self interest. yet Murdoch et al are running such ads (propaganda)
on the other side on a massive scale under the guise of news and 'commentary'.

The internet can be a counterbalance. Our political leaders should be
a hard hitting counterbalance. Not the President himself, he must stay
slightly aloof, but every elected DEM below him. WE must be the
counterbalance, as many here in DU are actively doing. KICK THEM IN
THE NUTS AS HARD AS CAN BE, and (I weep to say it, a tricky issue) but
perhaps we should also decline to "take prisoners" when going after BLUE DOGS.

This is no trivial fight. This is a defining fight. We cannot lose it.
We cannot leave the other side standing, for they have great wealth and power,
and much hatred and contempt of what we seek to accomplish. This is a war.
Have no doubt.

Thanks for the comment.
