1. K & R
I was going to save this one for the weekend since it's so long (no one seems to watch the long ones at work during the week), plus there's no show today so the clips are running out! At any rate, this is a good one.

Thanks for posting.

3. Haven't you heard?
Facts have a well known 'defeatist/circular firing squad/sky is falling' bias.

6. Out damn facts!
Yup.

The irony is that it's kind of self-fulfilling.

People resist the airing of dirty laundry to such an extent that we get bogged down in that part of the process and are unable to move on to the crucial next step (getting things clean) which can only come after we've confronted the facts and the reality.

As a result, many of us who are idealists/optimists get branded pessimists.

Step 1. Acknowledge we have a problem by confronting the facts
Step 2. Solve the problem

4. I'd rather see the public option removed
If it's going to be set up to fail and be nothing but a costly mess.

The Republicans will point to it forever whenever single payer is mentioned and the pathetic Dems will never be able to explain WHY it failed.

Either make it real or not at all.

Take the little reform crumbs and try later.

7. I fear you are absolutely right, Red Knight
Passing a "public option" at this point will probably do far more harm than good.

I initially supported a public option when it was suggested by Edwards because it seemed clear that his goal was to use government to beat private insurance at its own game. I saw it as a stepping stone to single payer. Of course, people could continue to purchase private insurance just as some people buy brand names instead of identical generics or drink bottled water even when their taxpayer funded water is safe. Advertising and fear-mongering are amazingly effective with some people, especially those with extra money. But the rest of us -- who either don't have the money or know better -- could go with public insurance instead.

But it's been clear almost from the outset that the "public option" has been gutted and that only the name remains.

8. The Public Option was just something to take the wind out of the demands for real change

Obama is a corporate salesman.

I don't believe in him, at all, anymore. Not that I held much hope, but I kept a 'sliver'.

It is all gone, now.

11. I think he's a little over pessimistic about the public option it isn't over till it's over really..
Edited on Sat Aug-22-09 11:16 AM by GivePeaceAchance
Everything is still a work in progress, as Seder even states at the start. There simply is no finalized bill yet. What makes me optimistic is there call for 80 seats, that tells me republicans are posturing some will pass the this bill in the final analysis, plus Howard Dean's very confident statements on the legislation. The GOP wouldn't want to make the goal post as high as that unless some are going to vote for the bill. It's only a matter of how strong it will be it looks. Even republican understand what 77 percent support for the public option means, it means most of them in the senate and house will have to vote for the bill. Despite what the GOP say to the contrary, just posturing pandering and trying to chip at President Obama's approval.
