We have started a recycling program in our community. While researching for a newsletter, I came across these two videos that scared the crap out of me. Garbage Island is twice the size of Texas and it's located in the Pacific between the US and Japan. There are other plastic islands throughout the oceans of the world. The health consequences due to plastic breaking down is frightening for humans and wild life.

2. between overfishing and using the ocean as a garbage dump . . .
there will come a time, probably in the not-too-distant future, when much of the life of the ocean will disappear . . . we won't have to worry about overfishing anymore because there won't be any fish left, as the chain of life that supports all ocean species becomes so disrupted that many species will cease to exist . . .

like most contemporary problems, when looking for someone to blame we can focus on multi-national corporations . . . those that use huge factory ships and dredge nets to literally clean sections of the sea of all living creatures, and those that use the ocean as a dumping ground for garbage they collect from homes and businesses, mostly in large industrialize nations . . . by not protecting the oceans and the myriad of life forms that populate them, we humans are putting both the seas and ourselves at great risk, since the oceans are the primary source of sustenance for many of the world's peoples . . .
