Gibbs responds: Why is anyone still listening to Dick Cheney?

In an interview with Fox News Sunday yesterday, Vice President Cheney aggressively attacked Attorney General Eric Holder for opening preliminary investigation into CIA interrogation abuses. He called it an “outrageous political act,” “intensely partisan,” and “politicized.” He said that the so-called enhanced interrogation techniques were directly responsible for keeping the country safe and by abandoning them, the Obama administration was putting Americans at risk. Today, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs responded to these accusations, wondering whether it’s really useful to listen to anything Cheney has to say on foreign policy:

I’m not entirely sure that Dick Cheney’s predictions on foreign policy have borne a whole lot of fruit over the last eight years in a way that have been either positive or, to the best of my recollection, very correct.

And every time, the Obama administration has been very timid in their responses until now.

31. Agreed. He's Fucked Himself and Liberals With Him.
It'll be a small miracle if Obama survives (politically) this term. All of his confidence and bravado while campaigning have turned to shit.

He's in a no win situation with health care, the least he could have done was act like he won the Presidency and the Democrats had the majority. But then, that's just me being impractical I guess.

WAIT for it!

blah blah blah...ad nauseum...

yeah - I'm sure it's all a GRAND PLAN - and part of it is UTTERLY CAPITULATING TO THE RIGHT WING...

sorry, I don't buy it either...

but I'm willing to be SURPRISED - but so far, it doesn't look promising at all...

3. He who controls the past controls the present
Now, repeat after the Big Dick: We were welcomed into Iraq as liberators . . . we were welcomed into Iraq as liberators . . . we were welcomed into . . .

What he really means is that US troops invaded Iraq in order to liberate the people from their mineral rights.

4. On the above statement, can we read between
the lines and add the words "damn lies"? Because I could certainly go along with that. Cheney did this whole thing ass-backwards - he should have been in the media for eight years and nowhere to be found thereafter.

8. I wish I didn't have to listen to Dick
He just will not shut up. Of course we know he's covering his butt now. The Obama administration said they wanted to go forward and not look at the past eight years of the wrongs by the Bush administration. After that it's been non-stop with Cheney. I guess he felt he had nothing to fear. But now he has fallen in a trap. He has admitted his guilt. Enter Eric Holder.

Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 04:51 PM by burning rain
He's pure evil and full of lies, but I do have some respect for a dedicated warrior who has honest passion--even though I hate him at the same time. Hatred is at least a higher emotion than contempt: no-one can say of Cheney that he's a wimp won't put up a fight. Or that he doesn't really believe in anything.

26. Cheney never really put up any fight.
In fact, he ran away from fights more than five times. He is, and has always been, a coward. A lucky-enough-to-get-away-with-all-of-his-crimes type of coward, but a coward nonetheless.

28. Of course, on the literal side of "fight," you have his deferments.
Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 10:34 PM by burning rain
And in Cheney's avoidance of fighting in Vietnam--unlike, say, the Vietnam War Opponent Bill Clinton's--there's the extreme incongruity of chickenhawkishness. But I don't push the chickenhawk argument too far, because I think warmongering more as a public policy issue, than a personal one. I don't much care if a warmonger is a draft-avoider like Cheney or Rumsfeld, or a guy with an honorable military record, like McCain. I reject them all.

There is exactly zero evidence that Cheney's torture program prevented any attacks on this country.

If he has any evidence to the contrary, he should cough it up. Otherwise just STFU.

To my mind, he and his evil buddies did the first one anyway. :evilfrown:

Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 08:46 PM by AlbertCat
And my hypothesis of why we've had no more huge attacks after 9/11 is...well, 9/11 worked so well! Al Qaeda got just what it wanted! An America so panicked it allowed for a 2nd stealing of the presidency, its economy collapsed, the population divided, habeas corpus suspended, the mistrust of the rest of the world. Good work! Well done. There's simply no reason to attack again. And with an eye kept on the Saudis, they might have to wait until another Saudi kissy-kissy friendly administration is in again to set up another attack.

Personally I think this is a more believable reason for the lull in attacks (here anyway....not elsewhere) than the taking off of our shoes at airports and the threatening of prisoners with a power drill.

29. You do know that US/CIA created Taliban/Al Qaeda . . .
and was financing it with $124 million just in the year of 9/11 -- with tens
of millions going to them in the month before?

Trust you also know that we helped spread fanatical Islam -- including supplying the
text books with that really, really fanatical stuff...

There is zero to no change that the Bush/Cheney administration didn't know what was
going to happen -- every nation's intelligence was warning us and our intelligence
agencies -- PLUS . . .

the United Nations in August before the attacks responded to the White House "operation
ignore" on these warnings, but sending their National Security representatives to the
White House and to our intelligence agencies to warn them.

It would be impossible to say they didn't know what was coming.

But, IMO, it was MIHOP.

Granted -- all the rest of it is also fake -- evidently the Patriot Act was ready to go
in Congress two days after 9/11!!

And, Al Qaeda followed up with an attack on Congress? Just happened to be those liberals
opposing it?

Makes sense if you think up is down!

27. glad to see this but
why is Cheney not in prison for war crimes? Spewing vile nonsense cloaked in bureaucratese should not be a privilege he is still afforded. Call me Captain Obvious but we are all besmirched with his smug smile as long as it isn't poking out froglike from oversized prison orange coveralls. The rest of the world, including ourselves as citizens of a world upon which the part of America Cheney represents preys, will live in fear until this mass murderer and torturer is brought to justice. Convincingly, unequivocally, with the kind of gut punch that silences bullies. Hard enough to make them sell their SUVs in shame.

Gibbs is great, but Cheney is not a political football, he's a political turd and no one should even want to touch him except to shovel him to where he can be safely flushed.

Gibbsy's glibness is a sad, pathetic substitute for actually facing up to torturers and war criminals.

They need to save the snark for the sexcapades, and stop driving the torture getaway car.

that is not enough. Lip service does little when the evil bastard Cheney belongs in jail. I am so disappointed in the justice Obama has brought to the white house. I fear all crooks will go free and the US takes another giant step backward. I hope I am wrong. Until I see something change there is no change I can believe in.

38. Someone does need to tell Dick to STFU
9/11 happened on their watch and largely due to their negligence. I'd tell him, "We get one freebie like you." So if another attack occurs, first one doesn't count... Dick.

Everyone knows the only reason Dick is running his mouth is he's worried about the very remote possibility of having to answer for his crimes. We know it won't happen and he's a fretting coward.
