was at the 1976 GOP convention, not 1980 as KO and Dean briefly discussed.
That was the last time that a major party nomination was in doubt at the start of a convention -- and the co-presidency scheme was floated as a way to forge some sort of unity.
It was too weird to work and the idea fell apart within a very few hours after it was suggested.
Also, Dean said that "Bush can't fire him," which is techically accurate, but misleading. If Bush was of a mind to do so, he could publicly ask for Darth's resignation. If Cheney were to refuse, it would be easy to get the 67 votes for conviction in an impeachment trial in the Senate.
That would also allow Bush to nominate Colin Powell or Condi Rice as the next Vice President and the Dems would have no prayer of stopping either one from getting ratified.
Although it is still impossible to be sure what (if anything) goes on in Dubya's head -- it is very clear that he does not have any problem with anything Cheney has done so far. I find it most likely that he is content with Cheney being so unpopular, taking the worst of the heat for the various proto-fascist initiatives that keep rolling forward as public policy.
