Wendell Potter, former CIGNA Healthcare Director of Communications explains the insurance industry practice of rescission

It's a real shame that Faux viewers never take notice of people like Potter who speak the truth and are only speaking out for their best interests. Instead they only listen to those are deceiving them into backing health care corporations who do not have their best interests at heart.

We need to make his name a household word.

I own a clinic and I used to see this all the time untill we stopped billing insurance and took out clinic from the work of health insurance billing to the work of health care.

I have even seen a form of this played out against doctors that the insurance companies don't like (because they actually do thier jobs and care for their patients) by way of retroactively canceling payments for months because they have "reviewed" the records and decided that something they used to pay for shouldn't have been payed for and so they want their money back.

Insurance companies rob everyone and our elected representatives help them. Keep calling and meeting with reps and citizens. Hold their feet to the fire. They are scared and now is the time to strike.

Absolutely chilling. These people are just heartless, always, always blaming the victim.

I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone can be so coldblooded, so identified with big business, so bereft of compassion and common sense to find any way to justify this practice. Rescission is simply a nasty business practice that violates people's trust in the good faith of the health insurance industry. I very much doubt that many health insurance contracts are canceled on the basis of material fraud. No, they are canceled because insurance companies will look for any pretext to deny coverage. They actively seek out reasons. Oh, that treatment is experimental. Oh, this medicine isn't on our approved list, you have to take this one instead. Oh, that doctor is out of network. Oh, you had a yeast infection ten years ago, so you defrauded us by not telling us and we take back our contract!

The insurance companies have people to pour over medical records to find reasons to deny coverage, so inadvertant failures to disclose may result in rescission. Of course, after years of accepting premiums it is patently unfair to rescind a contract.

This worship of capitalism and the private markets is bizarre. I mean consumers have very little power vis a vis the insurance industry, particularly health insurance. Why on earth shouldn't that inequity be addressed?

insurance company determines that the policy holder lied or was mis-leading on their application, the insurance company then REFUNDS the money that the policy holder paid in all of those years, correct?

NO! you say....hmmmm......

How could the insurance company keep any money that they collected from a 'fraudulent' application? The money paid in should rightfully be returned to the payor.

Accepting money (and KEEPING IT) means that there is a contract "in force".

response than my first thought which was - the insurance company doesn't just "save billions of dollars" doing this, they STEAL millions of dollars in premiums from the people whose policies they rescind.

the corporate equivalent of being tarred, feather, drawn, quartered, and the pieces hung from pikes along the road to be a lesson for others. There is no hell in this universe which is bad enough for insurance company executives and the people who set these policies.
