As I wrote in repsonse to this video, Faux news is a danger to America's intellectual capacity and its reputation across the world. Did you know that there are http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,184837,00.html">over 100 cable operators in Pakistan broadcasting Faux's Neocon/Corporatist/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-BfAuLS3c4">Islamaphobic propaganda? Great way to win "hearts and minds", huh?

Hitler on Propaganda

In chapter six of Mein Kampf,Hitler reviewed the use of propaganda during World War I. In the course of his criticism of the German effort, he included comments on the function of propaganda in general. His statements offer insight into the methods used by the Nazi Party.

Source: Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, translated by Ralph Manheim. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1943.

The function of propaganda does not lie in the scientific training of the individual, but in calling the masses' attention to certain facts, processes, necessities, etc., whose significance is thus for the first time placed within their field of vision.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

All propaganda must be popular and its intellectual level must be adjusted to the most limited intelligence among those it is addressed to. Consequently, the greater the mass it is intended to reach, the lower its purely intellectual level will have to be. But if, as in propaganda for sticking out a war, the aim is to influence a whole people, we must avoid excessive intellectual demands on our public, and too much caution cannot be extended in this direction.
The more modest its intellectual ballast, the more exclusively it takes into consideration the emotions of the masses, the more effective it will be. And this is the best proof of the soundness or unsoundness of a propaganda campaign, and not success pleasing a few scholars or young aesthetes.

The art of propaganda lies in understanding the emotional ideas of the great masses and finding, through a psychologically correct form, the way to the attention and thence to the heart of the broad masses. The fact that our bright boys do not understand this merely shows how mentally lazy and conceited they are.

Once understood how necessary it is for propaganda in be adjusted to the broad mass, the following rule results:
It is a mistake to make propaganda many-sided, like scientific instruction, for instance.

The receptivity of the great masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan. As soon as you sacrifice this slogan and try to be many-sided, the effect will piddle away, for the crowd can neither digest nor retain the material offered. In this way the result is weakened and in the end entirely cancelled out.

Thus we see that propaganda must follow a simple line and correspondingly the basic tactics must be psychologically sound.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

What, for example, would we say about a poster that was supposed to advertise a new soap and that described other soaps as 'good'?
We would only shake our heads.

Exactly the same applies to political advertising.

The function of propaganda is, for example, not to weigh and ponder the rights of different people, but exclusively to emphasize the one right which it has set out to argue for. Its task is not to make an objective study of the truth, in so far as it favors the enemy, and then set it before the masses with academic fairness; its task is to serve our own right, always and unflinchingly.

3. Paraphrasing Sun Tzu in 'The Art of War': It's important that we know our enemy
The actual quote:

故曰:知彼知己,百战不殆;不知彼而知己,一胜一负;不知彼,不知己,每战必殆。
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a thousand battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose. If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

4. Exactly
Which is why I watch fox from time to time, although it's been getting more and more difficult because their fiction is turning extremely violent. Done this for years on this notion.

Part of it is becuase Air America was taken off the air in my city and I like talk radio, even if it is the propaganda channels. Another part of it is to hear the crap that they are spewing.

Enter my discussions with Right wing Rethugs. I hear them say the EXACT SAME THINGS AS THESE GUYS SAY. If this was a smarter group, it might even be verbatim. It pisses off at least one person I know to no end whenever I bring up the fact that I heard the exact same argument on the radio the day prior. I am thinking about one person in particular that I have conversations with alot. Yesterday I told this rethug that I heard what he said on the radio the other day and mentioned that he was getting more and more hateful, even using 911 as a call to celebrate hatred. He could not quite figure out what I meant by "him saying things on his radio show", so he took the bait. I explained to him that I was just cutting out the middle man. If he is just going to repeat what he hears on the radio all the time, why not just cut out the middle man and listen to Glenn Beck to hear what this person's opinion is. He just walked away fuming! I haven't ever seen him that shaken! :)

10. DU is obviously not part of the masses
as soon as Fox news propaganda shows up here,
thinly disguised as an easily-identifiable troll,
posters on DU jump all over it and make it go away.

"The receptivity of the great masses is very limited,
their intelligence is small,
but their power of forgetting is enormous."

"Ah but the internet is awesome, Mister Fox, and
the human heart even more so."

17. true, knowing what is going on is the best answer to knowing how to confront it

reasoned opposition obviously would not work because their reason would not hold up fact-for-fact with the democrats in power. this is bare-bones, dog fight, no holds barred cage fighting strategy and silence is allowing it to occur. But the stupidist thing to do is ever step into that cage with them.

President Obama on 60 minutes proves them wrong every time he speaks, but it is a constant battle when a manipulative TV host can appeal to the dogfight dogs out there and rattle their cage violently. All with the purpose of then taking that cage and opening it up on the White House lawn.

FoxNews is the shame of America.

18. I come to DU for intelligent discussion. That's why I don't want to see Fox
News items all over the place. My goal is to lift the level of discussion here and with everyone I know. I live in a lower middle class area. Who are the masses? My neighbors. Most of them are far more intelligent than Fox News. The only person I know who watches Fox News is actually quite wealthy. She is not a member of the masses. She is a somewhat bigoted, born-again Christian who thinks that everyone else is poor because they haven't made the good, Christian choices she made. She would be surprised to find out just how wonderful my neighbors, virtually all solid Democrats and no fans of Fox News are.

This whole Fox News items craze on DU is the troll, not me.

11. "without fox news and talk radio our republic would be done, DONE"
wtf planet does these morons live on. The nightmare Beck talks about sounds like the return to a civil society, where facts are investigated and verified, and loud unsubstantiated opinion is lower on the totem poll than solid journalism. This is the basics of a good education- Something Beck never bothered to pursue.

I love how the panel blindly accepts Becks discount of CNN's almost equally frequent mention of the Acorn sting as "well we don't really know if it was positive or negative commentary" So in other words, if you aren't listening to fox, you are not only not hearing about it enough, but you are not hearing about how outrageously bad it is. That's fair and balanced Faux.

Can we have a department of truth? The BS meter clips the red zone every time Beck opens his mouth.

I still would like to know who set Acorn up- i'm sure they did their research and found some rogue employee and then set up the sting to make it look like all of Acorn was immoral.

13. So how does one UNDERMINE propaganda?
Watching the teabag protests last weekend, and signs indicating that the teabaggers consider every other major news source in American - CNN, MSNBC, The NYT, Washington Post, everyone - to be "liberal," and only Fox and Drudge and talk radio tell them the truth!

Fox News is not a news channel; it's a way of life, a belief system.

So how do you undermine that?

Not with the typical Democratic nuanced arguments. The Mein Kampf excerpts suggest why that will fail; Democrats always want to think the people are more intelligent and more willing to listen to reason than they actually are.

Obama is failing at the better messaging. He could crush these people by making health care about America: We want to build a stronger America... ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country... Republicans need to show more empathy for their fellow Americans.

It would be very simple now for Democrats to turn the discussion around and force the right into the position of arguing against America itself.

Ah, but we won't do that, it would be too divisive, can't we all just get along.

No, we can't.

16. its true, reason and fact don't matter with propaganda like this..
even if you have a non-profit non-partisan organization like factcheck.org saying something they don't believe in they will dismiss it as liberal propaganda, event though the organization itself was founded and supported by a conservative foundation. I'd suggest an answer to your questions is perseverance- stating the truth in all forums we can with evidence that can't be refuted until they are forced to admit their lies, and continuing to lobby prominent and respected conservatives to face that their party has been taken over by the lunatic fringe and they need to publicly refute the Beck's of the world to at least return to rational civic debate. I know about fox-watch and other organizations like that that catch them on their lies- so more support for those organizations too.

constantly. This seems to be the tactic of the RW when they want to silence dissension. Let's beat them at their own game.

accommodate the whiners.

Compare that with the reich-wingers who never move an inch toward our side in any disagreement. Does anyone actually think that Fuck Nuze would moderate their message, even if millions complained? Even boycotts and lost advertising have no impact on that cesspool of propaganda.

Tactics do matter, and those employed by the Dems (assuming, which I don't, that they have our interests at heart) are uniquely ineffective against a much stronger enemy.
