3. Usually I like these New Rules segments a lot
this one was kind of tired. PIcking on fat people only goes so far. Even though I agree with him on some points, I don't think a sin tax on soda is the answer.

Also, I think the surgeon general got a bad rap. I didn't know about the burger king gig, but she has done a lot of work with clinics in impoverished areas. Maybe she's realized that a lot of these people are eating at burger king and was looking for a way to undo some of the damage. Who knows?

Just not my favorite segment (and for the record, I'm not, nor have I ever been fat).

4. Considering I have to pay a HUGE tax on my cigarettes...
I think that people that drink tons of sodas, eat junk food, and drink plastic bottled water should pay a HUGE tax on those items.
I've been waiting for the day that the non-smokers will have to pay a big tax on something that they use/enjoy, cause I want to hear them bitch and whine!
LOL!

To all those people that didn't stand up for us smokers it is NOW payback time!

5. I don't agree with sin taxes.
And I didn't agree with taxing smokers.

I agree with taxing people who use more than their share of resources via gas guzzlers, yachts, lear jets, etc. People who can afford the taxes.

Oh, and for the record, if they did tax sodas, junk food and plastic containers, it wouldn't affect me as I don't eat that stuff.

9. you need to eat to survive
Many people with bad diets are lower to middle-income people who stock up on lots of foods with carbs or cheaper meats and greasier type of foods because they are often more cost effective and they can feed their kids with them etc. Jamming a cancer stick in your mouth is a personal choice that you can stop with enough willpower and help eating really isn't. Do I necessarily think any of it is fair? Nope, but on a scale of who should take a hit first smokers don't and shouldn't get much sympathy.

12. I think you missed the point...
People can eat at home. People do not need to go to fast food places and eat junk.
People can drink a glass of water or a glass of juice - no one is forcing them to drink soda - soda is a luxury and SHOULD BE TAXED.

Cooking at home IS CHEAPER than the prices that are charged at fast-food restaurants.

The point here is that my CHOICE to smoke is equal to your CHOICE to eat fast-food.
If I chose to die from smoking and not by clogging my arteries from fast-food then that is MY choice, no matter what you think is the right thing to do.

Your right/choice/opinion holds no more weight than my right/choice/opinion.

Now they are talking about banning smoking in New York parks -- because people don't want to SEE other people smoking.
Well all I can say to those folks are F U :)

13. it isn't equal

Some families can't afford juice and even then juice has as much sugar and calories as many sodas. I grew up on an Indian reservation, families often subsisted partly on commodities given to them as part of treaty negotiations. They were given fattening foods like lard, butter, cheese, flour, peanut butter. To augment these things they bought cheaper foods like hamburger and potatoes. They friend these foods. If you are a family with little money and you get food stamps, try going out and buying all kinds of fruits and vegetables, healthy meats like fish and chicken etc. You wouldn't get through the month. Not even close. On the otherhand, all you would have to do is stop smoking. So yes it holds weigh more weight than your choice because some people really don't have much of a choice regarding buying healthy food or what they can get just to survive.

15. You are still missing the point.
Water = free from the faucet (basically).
Soda = luxury and should be taxed.

Food in the grocery store shouldn't be taxed.
Food at a fast food restaurant should be taxed.
Foods such as rice, potatoes, oatmeal, fish, chicken thighs/legs, pasta, apples, oranges, bananas, etc. bought in the grocery store is MUCH cheaper than eating at a fast food place. Even making burgers at home is cheaper than in the fast food places.

My smoking and buying cigarettes (since I can afford to do so - and they are legal here in the USA) is no ones business, but if they are going to tax the hell out of me then the people drinking SODA and eating fast food should be taxed also.

22. If there was the public license to bitch about booze that there is about smoking...
... my town would be a better place. Oddly, being obnoxious about smoking became hip, not surprisingly in that place best known for good breeding and manners (California) and spread throughout the nation. But, while half the people in California are in recovery, you simply don't see the anti-booze fad spreading across the nation like I would like to see happen.

Bitch about smoking and you're hip. Bitch about drinking, and you're some kind of Methodist artifact.
