Further coverage of the hearings http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/texas_textbook_hearings/

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/09/tx_board_ed_member_minorities_be_thankful.php

Yesterday, we spent about four hours watching a spotty livestream of the revival meeting history textbook hearing by the State Board of Education down in Austin, Texas.

Those are the standards on which -- it can't be repeated enough -- publishers base their nationwide textbooks, and the ones that currently contain a clause requiring knowledge of Newt Gingrich.

Well, the board met for another four hours after lunch. Not much was said about Gingrich beyond that it was "not easy" to draft the clause, but it's worth checking out some highlight clips we pulled to see first-hand how the partisan and frankly ignorant worldviews of some of the board members influence the standards writing process.

In these clips, the seated officials are members of the GOP-majority board of ed. The woman standing up is the representative of the high school U.S. history textbook standards writng team. Keep in mind, the writing team is supposed to incorporate in its next revision of the standards the input of the board members.

Next up, Barbara Cargill, who is concerned about applying the words "imperialism" or "propaganda" to any action of the U.S. government:

Here, again, is McLeroy, demanding that "Republican leaders" be included in the section on civil rights because a greater percentage of Republicans than Democrats voted for the Civil Rights Act:

'Expert' Barton Brings Religio-Historical Road Show To TX Board Of Ed Hearing
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/09/barton_brings_religio-historial_road_show_to_tx_bo.php

David Barton, who critics call a "Christian nationalist history revisionist," comes off more as smooth-talking history buff than fiery evangelist.

Evangelical Minister 'Expert' Spars With TX Board Of Ed Members About Inclusion Of Minorities
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/09/evangelical_minister_expert_spars_with_board_of_ed.php

The Rev. Peter Marshall is one of the "experts" appointed by the Texas State Board of Education who has come under fire for his lack of academic credentials and unapologetic right-wing Christian agenda.

Testifying today at the board of ed hearing on controversial new social studies standards, Marshall didn't disappoint. He got things started with a rousing 10-minute tour through a Christian-centric version of US history.

Could Texas' Gingrich-Based High School History Curriculum Go National?
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/09/could_texas_gingrich_based_curriculum_go_national.php

Approved textbooks, the standards say, must teach the Texan student to "identify significant conservative advocacy organizations and individuals, such as Newt Gingrich, Phyllis Schlafly, and the Moral Majority." No analogous liberal figures or groups are required, prompting protests from some legislators and committee members. (Read an excerpt here.)

The standards on Nixon: "describe Richard M. Nixon's role in the normalization of relations with China and the policy of detente."

On Reagan: "describe Ronald Reagan's role in restoring national confidence, such as Reaganomics and Peace with Strength." (That's it.)

The Cold War section is rendered as "U.S. responses to Soviet aggression after World War II ... "

11. Well Texans have to get rid of these Christian Taliban who are intent on

putting together a Christian version of Sharia
and Theocratic education which is no different
than the pernicious influence of the Madrasas
in Pakistan. Which, are the origin, along with
the Wahabi madrasas in Saudi Arabia of Islamic
Fundamentalism.

If you examine the doctrines of Fundamentalist
Jewish, Christian and Islamic movements there
is a surprising coherence in ideology and theology.

The three pillars of all three are Paternalism, Homo
phobia and Manifest Destiny and all three invoke the
specter of and end time global war between the righteous
and the infidel.

I hope Texans can rid themselves of the influence of the
Christian Right. I am very pessimistic about the outcome.

The war over textbook content is being waged in Texas for
one very good reason not lost on the Religious Right, the
major text book publishers follow Texas content standards
because Texas is one if not the largest purchaser of public
school text books. So the RW's know if they can Christianize
Texas schoolbook standards, the rest of the country will follow.

it is the only thing that keeps us from just dropping
the bomb on texas.

for we must also remember that there are still some sane texans,
even some hiding here in DU. imagine THEIR suffering, eh?
at the hands of these fundamentalist whackouts.
they deserve our sympathy and help too.

and the fundie-cretins? They deserve to be mocked.

nice rant though, I quite enjoyed it. its the kind i write.

4. so the Texas Board of edacashun is full of uneducated morons.
Someone should tell this dumbass that it wasn't a case of majority people giving rights to minorities, it was a case of majorities keeping rights from minorities that they were ENTITLED to, until minorities finally shamed the majority into RESTORING their rights. What a fucking, fucking fuckhead.

15. If you want to really piss them off, tell them we're going to give them back to Mexico.
You know the funny thing about that is that the majority of the whites in Texas would probably believe it. If they don't start educating their citizens with at least a 20th century education they'll probably end up believing in a "god" bomb or getting "returned" to Mexico.

23. i have a more er.. practical .. view of that. mostly..
to begin with whether rational conversation and discussion
is possible, if none is possible that is usually a bad sign.

for although we are all bigots of one form or another
if we are intelligent, and open to self examination,
we can recognize and understand our bigotry, and reign it in
to assure it is given no real voice.

for we we cannot stop being bigots. I believe it is inherent in the way the
human brain functions, it is deeply imbedded in our languages.
what chance have we got to avoid bigotry? NONE!
but whether or not I am right on that, we can
control its effects. in short, being a bigot is not the problem,
it is acting like a bigot, acting on your bigotries, that creates the problems.

if we understand that, we become more tolerant of those who may "misspeak",
or through lack of cultural background/ training/understanding/experience/etc
may need to better understand the sensitivity of others. such problem may be
solved by courteous discussion. pistols at twenty paces is entirely avoidable.

alas, there are but few who will engage an examination of their own
bigotries. (see paragraph 1), and fewer still who, having been offended,
will pause a moment to set aside the hurt and seek to engage the 'offender'.
still, its worth a shot. the ones who 'get it' are just too valuable to waste.

your main objective was to bash the fundies, (a worthy endeavor! we are all bigoted against THOSE!)
but in lashing out at these fundie-cretins you may inadvertently revealed another bias,
back to that in a second, but i did not sense it to be of a kind requiring anything
more than a little humor to raise it to your conscious layer. you revealed your
inner self a bit, it was nothing really, but your response has already proved
you see that and do 'get it'.

as for self revealing statements, they are pretty much unavoidable. good luck trying
to hide them. I remember Vito Corleone admonishing his son Sonny to "never let them
know what you're thinking". maybe so, but not everyone is comfortable being as laconic
as Vito Corleone, nor in the same harsh business. we talk to each other. awkward
and revealing statements will happen, but they need not be a wedge between people of
good will. that is the lesson we must all try to learn.

you get one 'star' for reading all this. best wishes.

17. I see his point...
I see his point. But it is stupid. It was the minorities who did all the marching, protesting, petitioning, lobbying for their EQUALITY. It was the majority who suppressed them to begin with.

If they want to take credit for giving the equality, they should take responsibility for the inequalities, past, present, and future.

Women never chose not to have a voice. Blacks never chose not to be white. Gays never chose not to be married. The "majority" chose for them. The majority decided that the minority couldn't be equal, can't be equal and, by the sounds of this guy, WON'T be equal. But that's okay, because the minority is becoming the majority.

Have fun in the future begging the "majority" for your rights back.

I agree with you. It seems to me that it is a classic
situation of the cheater believing everyone else is cheating.
I think there is a clear fear by the hate mongers believing
the future majority will seek revenge or redemption on the
current majority. I feel it is the responsibility of those of
us that are still sane to look for equality and not revenge.
