"This is an opportunity for us," Blunt told his predominantly white audience, "this is a time for us to be more of who we should be."

Congressman Blunt then went on to tell an anecdote which suggested that life in Washington, for GOP members today, is comparable to the lot of imperial British agents in India who had to contend with monkeys running amok on a golf course that the colonial occupiers had carved out of the verdant Indian jungle. There was a problem, the Missouri Representative explained; monkeys would come out of the jungle, grab golf balls, and throw them about. Amidst swelling laughter from his audience Roy Blunt narrated,

"I could go into great and long detail about how many things they did to try and eliminate the 'monkey problem.' But they never got it done, so finally this golf course and this golf course only, they passed a rule and the rule was - you have to play the ball where the monkey throws it. And that is the rule in Washington all the time."

It seemed like a direct window into the psyche of the revanchist wing of the GOP; politics is a golf game and unruly Democrat "monkeys" have swarmed out of the jungle to disrupt the play. Since it is impractical to "eliminate" the monkeys, accommodations will have to be made. Republicans will now "play the ball where the monkey throws it."
Blunt's anecdote was all the more risque' for Tony Perkins' past association with elements of the racist right. As described in journalist Max Blumenthal's new book Republican Gomorrah (2009, Nation Books), in 1996 while working as a GOP Senate race campaign manager Perkins paid $82,500 to buy a phone banking list from former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. Then, in 2002, Perkins spoke at a fundraiser for the Louisiana chapter of the Council of Conservative Citizens, a national white supremacist group. The CofCC "Statement of Principals" states that "We also oppose all efforts to mix the races of mankind, to promote non-white races over the European-American people through so-called 'affirmative action' and similar measures, to destroy or denigrate the European-American heritage, including the heritage of the Southern people, and to force the integration of the races."

7. Racist Birther SOB Speaking to a Bunch of Racist Birther SOBs
July 28, 2009:

Blunt: What I don't know is why the President can't produce a birth certificate. I don't know anybody else that can't produce one. And I think that's a legitimate question. No health records, no birth certificate. . .

Stark: He's produced a certificate of live birth, right?

Blunt: Not that I. . . I don't believe so.

Stark: No, he has. Chris Matthews held it up on Hardball the other night.

Blunt: Take it up with Chris Matthews. . .

8. Do you suppose there was a single person in that crowd who found this offensive?
Republicans just love this kind of joke. They all know he's talking about Obama when he says 'play it where the monkey throws it'. We all know it. But since he didn't actually say 'Obama' or 'the President' or make any other direct comparison, they can say "Aw, he was just telling a story- that's not racist! It's the Lefties who are racist for thinking so!"

This is what happens when the Congressional leadership wimps out. Joe WIlson should have been expelled from the house for what he did. Instead, the wimps just slapped him on the wrist. Blount should be CENSURED by the house for his racist remarks!

15. Racism . . . THE . . . Rupublican Family Value on full display!
Now the GOPers will say . . . "oh, Roy was just made a bad choice of words." Or, "Oh, you Democrats are taking what he said out of context." Or, "oh, it was just a joke, you Demcrats need to lighten up."

Bullshit. Bullshit! And, BULLSHIT.

Blunt was giving a prepared speech - he knew exactly what he was saying; the "context" of his remarks are clear - he was calling the President a "monkey." And, there was nothing funny about the story.

It was RACISM . . . THE Republican Family Value on full, open, display.

This guy should be crucified in the press. This was every bit as offensive as George Allen and his "macacca" moment, or Imus with his "nappy-headed ho" comment.

Lets see what the media does with it.

16. This was worse than Allen or Imus-
-for the very reason you already stated: It was a prepared statement. Neither of the others were. I even give Imus a partial pass because I understand that he's an idiot who was just trying to be a "shock jock". He didn't expect the kind of public outcry that followed his comment- he thought he was making a joke. He should have known better than to say that, but I don't believe it was said with malice intended.

17. I'm not defending the man, but the story was innocent
I've heard it before in management meetings. "You play the ball where the monkey throws it." This is similar to saying that "You play the cards that the dealer gave you," but with a better hook and a sense of the absurd to lighten the message.

Come on guys, not everything is racist, even when spoken by racists. Freud nailed it - "Some times a cigar is just a cigar."

BTW - think this through, if Blunt was making a direct analogy, he would be casting the Republican party as the British soldiers "occupying" the territory. While you and I might agree that this accurately describes the Republicans, I'm sure Blunt does not. Also, since the voters are the ones that threw the curve ball (or the golf ball, as it were), the monkeys are not the President, or the Dems, but the voters.

20. "Some times a cigar is just a cigar"
And sometimes, a cigar is something else all together.

In this case, there was nothing innocent, or funny, about Blunt's comments.
