Let's be real: it was MURDER.
The wingnuts in the media have worked up their listeners to a froth. I'm very afraid this may be just the beginning, as we have only seen their hatred escalate to ridiculous levels. Their flirting with violent rhetoric has gone too far.

So far, only an "anonymous" source reports as much and even if it were true it doesn't completely rule out suicide. Surprisingly irrational people sometimes do irrational things. Even if he was murdered, it's possible someone did it for other reasons and planted a ruse to cover their tracks.

I strongly suspect it is murder and that what you've already accepted as fact is true, but that doesn't mean I'm going to pretend I know what happened with such a large degree of certainty until more facts are known. I'm patient enough to wait for at least some sort of official word on the matter. There will be plenty of time for finger pointing.

I've refused a long census questionnaire. They may come around once or twice more to see if they can catch you in a more agreeable mood, but no fines or legal action.

The maximum fine for refusal to answer questions on a census is $100 and is rarely enforced.

There is a maximum fine of $500 for lying on a census.

There are higher fines which can be imposed on business owners or census employees, but these are generally serious infractions like manipulating data or intentionally revealing the private responses of those participating in the census.
