Moore is totally off based to say we should pay SS taxes on all of our income unless we acknowledge what Social Security has become: a back door way of funding all government programs because politicians for decades have raided the "lock box." I can honestly say, as a middle income wage earner, I hate these increases every year when they take more and more social security taxes out of my paycheck. Over the years its a big expense and that employers do not take into account when they figure cost of living pay increases. It is particularly disheartening to keep paying for these increases when I seriously doubt I will see a dime of Social Security by the time I am retirement age.
We can hold to our progressive ideals without giving the government the lions share of what we earn! Come on people. I work for the government. I see every day the incredible waste that goes on. What needs to happen is BO needs to clean up the waste so that we can use the money saved to pay for progressive causes like health care and a cleaner environment. If he doesn't do that then he cannot succeed because their is not enough money in this country to advance our causes and keep our economy strong. Now I do not make near the salary Hannity does; I do not even make $200K a year. But between property taxes, sales taxes and income taxes more than 27% goes to government. That's a whole lot when you consider how expensive everything is now days. So we don't need to be paying more taxes -- at least those making under $250K a year as Obama stated during the campaign. What we must do is reduce the waste, and I can tell you there is a mind blowing amount of waste in the three programs I have had the most contact with: Medicare, Social Security disability and defense spending.
Even forgetting advancing progressive causes, we cannot continue this waste because we cannot continue the deficit spending if we are to have a good economy. Have you seen the spectacular fall of the dollar the past 10 months. Every time we decide to deficit spend more, the dollar goes down a little more in value. We have to get a handle on this waste or we will push ourselves into economic oblivion. Think about it. In 2000 the Chinese loan the US govt no telling home many billions. In 2009 their are paid that money back, with interest, but the dollar is only worth 60-70% of what it was in 2000! These people who invest in T bills are not stupid. They will quit buying them eventually and then when that happens what are we going to do? Our country is turning into a person who is like a credit card abuser: we max out one card, we transfer the balance to another, and then we max out both cards. We cannot keep doing that. We have to get our economic house in order. If we don't, then not only will our progressive causes go down the tubes, but our country will too! Furthermore, we cannot just say: raise taxes on the rich. We can do that to an extent but remember the US isn't the only game in town. Eventually, the rich will just invest their money outside America. Also, we have a serious unemployment problem. The rich are the people who create most jobs. If we raise taxes on them too much they will hunker down and not create jobs. So we have to be smart about how we approach this problem. We cannot be dogmatic to our ideology like Moore is. We have to be realistic and most important of all, we have to get this waste under control.
