Members of the Maldives' Cabinet donned scuba gear and used hand signals Saturday at an underwater meeting staged to highlight the threat of global warming to the lowest-lying nation on earth.

President Mohammed Nasheed and 13 other government officials submerged and took their seats at a table on the sea floor — 20 feet (6 meters) below the surface of a lagoon off Girifushi, an island usually used for military training.

With a backdrop of coral, the meeting was a bid to draw attention to fears that rising sea levels caused by the melting of polar ice caps could swamp this Indian Ocean archipelago within a century. Its islands average 7 feet (2.1 meters) above sea level.

"What we are trying to make people realize is that the Maldives is a frontline state. This is not merely an issue for the Maldives but for the world," Nasheed said.

As bubbles floated up from their face masks, the president, vice president, Cabinet secretary and 11 ministers signed a document calling on all countries to cut their
carbon dioxide emissions.

1. Maldives home of a bunch of rich F^%KS who stole the islands from the poor.

It's in the Shock Doctrine in the Tsunami chapter.

3. K&R. Should've had the G20 meeting underwater.
Perhaps Bangladesh will have their next cabinet meeting on one of those houseboats more of them are having to use as the sea level rises.

4. I really sympathize with these fuckfaces.
They'll welcome me to spend an entire week in their lovely RESORT ISLAND home for a mere $20,000.

6. This is a canary in the coal mine thing that we ignore at our peril
I don't know where you get the $20,000 from. Sure, you could probably spend that if you had the will and the wherewithal but I just did a quick search and found http://www.maldivesholidayoffers.com/">a site that has holidays for around $500.

7. I read about the Maldives in Vanity Fair magazine a few years ago.
I had never read that magazine before and decided never again too. All it did was make me want a bunch of ridiculously expensive stuff like a $50,000 watch.

You're right about ignoring global warming at our peril. I just kind of hate The Maldives, though.
