11. Democrats in Congress ARE trying to end the war!!!!!!!
I agree with everything Moore said here except these continued ultra-left assertions about how the Dems in Congress aren't doing their job on Iraq.
Please, please, please, for Christ sake get it right folks and stop attacking our own people!!!! This pretty damn good new Congress has sent Bush a bill to start removing troops. HE VETOED IT!!! Again, HE vetoed it and there were not enough votes to override. Now again the House has passed a bill to start bringing troops home. The Dems in the Senate are all behind their version including a few R's. The problem is the goddamn Senate rules require 60 votes for cloture, and most of the R's won't vote for cloture thus blocking the majority. Even still, if it was passed Bush again vows to veto and there just aren't enough votes to override. You need 67 votes in the Senate to override. They aren't there!!! Now some say just cut off the funding. It's quite so simple, there are still ways for the R's to block, and while Americans want the mission to change and to draw down troops eventually getting us completely out, the idea of cutting off all funds for the troops which Bush has the right to deploy is a very different matter, at least at this juncture. Last November the voters voted for a change in direction with a smart troop drawdown and eventual full removal, not necessarily a full and outright immediate exit overnight. It's a bit more complicated than that. What do we need to do? The Dems in Congress are doing it EXACTLY RIGHT!! They are continuing to apply pressure and forcing R's to cast votes that will damage them badly in the '08 elections, and believe me that the R's are getting scared as hell. The last thing they want is another election with the war front and center. Some are starting to defect. Others will follow as we go into the fall. But no doubt that another war election is what they will get with Bush in charge. Dems, Independents, and even some thoughtful R's are pissed as all hell, so as to '08 I completely disagree with Moore. They WILL go to the polls in droves and give us a new Dem President with a larger Dem Congressional majority so that we can get the job done. For God's sake, please train the fire on Bush and R's and stop lobbing shells at our own people. They are trying, and they are doing a lot of good things. Focus your energy on electing a Dem president and more Dems to Congress so we CAN get the needed votes in Congress, end the R blockades, and start UNscrewing this country in '09.

13. It took 31 attempts to end the war in Vietnam
The Dems need to keep passing these bills over and over and over and let bush be the bad guy here. NO MORE CAVING!!

I disagree that they don't want the war front and center in the election in 08. I think they DO want the war still raging on when we go to the polls.

Don't forget that Pelosi didn't include the war on her 100 hour agenda last December! They didn't want to end the war before November 08. The only reason they are working to bring our troops home now is because of the pressure we are placing on them.

15. Bull.
The Dem leadership put forth a weak, unenforceable bill that contained deadlines and provisions that Bush was free to ignore. When he vetoed it they passed a new bill that gave him everything he wanted.

As Kucinich and others have pointed out, they never should have given him ANY bill authorizing ANY supplemental funds for the war. Bush was still spending funds authorized last fall. He just wanted more and more of the same and the spineless Dems just handed it to him on a silver platter. Is that what you call "continuing to apply pressure"???

The only reason the Dems are making noise now about deadlines again is that a substantial number of Republicans have already indicated that if they're not satisfied with the progress in Iraq by September they'll join the Dems on the deadlines to end the war. The Dems just won't do what's right because they won't do it without a supermajority. They refuse to even consider that since they're in the majority they can simply prevent any spending bill from passing.

The Dems in Congress are NOT doing the job we elected them to do. We didn't elect them to sit on their cushy chairs. And they indeed deserve all the criticism they get for not listening to their constituents.
