keep as many people happy as possible. Tell the democrats you want to change things, but keep them the same for the republicans. The latter's happy that nothing changed, the former's happy that you (seemingly) tried.

Now you understand the early primary season last year. The progressives were whittled out one by one, Gravel, Kucinich, Edwards, anyone who would rock the boat of the status quo was left to get $25 contributions from individuals, while PACs shoveled thousands at a pop to Obama and Hillary. And they got what they wanted. They knew that the Republican well was poisoned so that not enough voters would drink from it, so they quickly had to find a likely vessel on the Democratic side that they could flavor with their Kool-Aid.
