With the new video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvR4u1IscdY from the Ady Gil I am convinced that the Japaneese diliberatly attacked. they First stuned her crew with a sonic wepon, and then blinded them with a water cannon as the were turning to starbord to ram her.

I would love to see what their viewpoint is.

Edit: Okay, I just watched the video. Don't think you can objectively be for the whalers in any way, shape or form.

the collision. They will tell us it is because they hate Watson, or because the Ady Gil accelerated about 2 seconds before she was run down, they will claim that they are against waling and that the Ady Gil shouldn't have been there. Personally I don't think the Japanese "research" vessel should have been there either. I am glad that we finally get video from the Minuit or so before the crash: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvR4u1IscdY

I am tired of this outlaw nation ignoring common sense and decency by continuing to murder these large brained, intelligent beings.

And if some of these Japanese die in the process, to damn bad.

the Japanese have drawn first blood. If they die because they murder other intelligent beings, it's on them.

If I saw someone about to shoot someone and I could shoot them to stop them, I would. If could shoot a Japanese national to sto him or her from killing a whale or dolphin, I would do that to.

And nothing you can say will ever change that. They deserve to die for the deaths they have caused.

23. outlaw nation?
so the quick, nimble and very high-tech ady gil was
outmaneuvered and deliberately slashed into by the
comparatively huge and lumbering shonan maru 2 - even though
the ady gil had been filmed dashing back and forth in front of
ships and trailing lines designed to jam the propellors of the
larger ships earlier this week ... sorry there mr. ferret but
i've seen too much newsreel film of shepherd tactics ...

yours seems to be a typical violence-laced reactionary comment
from a spooked american citizen who has been under attack for
decades from within with half-truths and misinformation and
has lost all ability of critical thinking ...

just who are you calling outlaws? you freedom lovers have been
and continue to slaughter, manipulate and impoverish folks the
world over so you can hoard their resources for your two-car
garages for decades unabated ... shall i list the nations for
you? by the decade?

i, once a trained and hired murderer for gawd and country and
dominoes am highly offended that you think a few of my
neighbors should die over this issue.

29. That mf'er ...
lumbering? you ask ... well, yeah, the video is 39 seconds
including crash ...
what? they should have put on the breaks and hung a right
turn?

this was just another fund raiser from the shepherd drama
queens ... radical whalism is another form of fanatical
terrorism. you try and obstruct a shipment of monsanto death
seeds and see how fast you are arrested and disappeared under
the patriot act [love that orwellian name].

they offer humble and thankful prayers to the spirits of their
food providers ... wonder when the gullible attentions of the
self righteous will turn to the automated and mechanical
slaughter of their protein on the hoof? and your much higher
carbon footprint ...

"the killing machine may exist?" 'great jeebus in
the sky' it is american policy to kill, maim and enslave to
keep the box stores full and you on the road! republicans? no,
dude, it's all americans. you claim you're a democracy and
kill in the name of your democracy ... it's not republicans,
it's you! how typically american to refuse any responsibility

9. Actually, I do think the guy's at least half wrong.
Or at least oversimplifying. I should point out I'm on record in another thread as being convinced now the whaler deliberately rammed the Ady Gil, from examining the "new" video.

That said, I believe it was noted elsewhere the larger vessel is usually considered the "stand on vessel," e.g. the one with the right-of-way, in an overtaking or converging situation. Now, the idea behind that seems to be the larger the vessel, the less visibility it has and the harder it is to move to avoid a collision -- since it can't see as well, ostensibly. That said, there's no question the whaler knows where the Ady Gil is, since they're pointing hoses and LRADs at them.

And that said, it was pointed out the visibility from the cockpit of the Ady Gil is crap, at least rearward.

So by the letter of the maritime rules, the whaler had right-of-way. By intent of those rules, a good argument can be made that they didn't.

10. A larger ship doesn't have the right-of-way to change course & run over any smaller ship in it's way
Simply because it's bigger.

11. Well, actually it sort of does.
If you read my post, I make the point that the intent of the "larger gets the right of way" has a lot to do with visibility. A big ship shouldn't change course willy-nilly when it knows another vessel is around, but if they do the other vessel is obliged to get out of the way.

Note that under "willy-nilly" I do not include deliberately turning to run over another vessel. And the visibility argument is null, since clearly the whalers have a good bead on the Ady Gil considering the LRAD and hoses and what-not.

I'm merely pointing out that the "maritime expert" in the video is rather skipping to the end, regarding who would be ultimately determined to have had the right-of-way. His presentation suggests it is obvious, when it is not.

Edited on Fri Jan-08-10 10:00 PM by Devil_Fish
Particularly at night, it is hard to tell who has the larger vessel. if this were the rule there would be meny collisions where the skippers would say "I thought my boat was bigger."

17. A lot of people are out there, through Sea Shepherd
We support them on a regular basis, and we sent them a little more when the Ady Gil got hit. I've convinced a lot of friends and family, and I'm still working on others, to stop buying Japanese goods of all kinds. Even though it is very unpopular in Alaska, we wear Sea Shepherd sweatshirts in Alaska, which has provided opportunities for us to encourage others to support them.

But you are correct. Why isn't Australia doing something to stop the illegal whaling in their sanctuary?
