4. This video needs to be seen by every American.
DAMN!!!

Yes! I've been saying this FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Opt out of the existing system. It only works for them, when we buy their shit and give them our money. You stop the cash flow and they'll begin to drop like flies.

Arrianna Huffington is right -- Move Your Money. But don't stop there with just moving your money.

- We have to get off the grid.....

8. The right of dissent is certainly still in danger...
I think that's one of the most disappointing things about the Obama administration. I'm just about as afraid to speak up today as I was under Bush.

9. Superb insights
He describes how the rise of Milosevic, Hitler, Lenin were products of economic collapse -

Palin is analogous of a vomiting up product of the US economic collapse -

Not participating in the corporate system -

My interpretation of this is the investment in local businesses, supporting community agriculture - becoming more self-sufficient as in not having to have the latest styles of clothing, the latest technologies - a simplifying experience

11. Just finished reading his book, Empire of Illusion. It's unsettling stuff to say the least.
I've had a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach for sometime regarding the direction this country appears to be heading. I believe Obama's heart may be in the right place, but it's looking increasingly like he doesn't have the strength to defy the powerful forces that are already entrenched. I'm not sure who would. There's also a good article about this topic on Truthout.org talking about the rise of authoritarianism, which is actually the precursor to totalitarianism. In our case, inverted totalitarianism. I truly fear that our country is turning into something many of us will no longer recognize in the next 10, 20, 30 years. It's sad that my 17 year old daughter even seems to recognize it. She told me not long ago how much harder things would be for their generation, and she may be one of the more fortunate ones. She's smart, attractive, and will have the benefit of a college education, which is obviously no guarantee, but it's far more than what many young Americans have.

12. I would disagree one small bit. We are not without demagogues
ourOur system of totalitarianism needs to always have twenty some percent of us cheering on the demagogue of whichever party the nation has most recently thrown its elections to.

So we had the Bush as "Guy I would like to have a beer with" and for many I talked to during the Bush years, he was a demagogue. Those of us who disliked, or hated and feared the man and his appointees and his policies saw him as a demagogue. And those under his sway saw Bush not as demagogue, but as demi-god.

In November of 2008, the nation was so fed up with Bush that they moved a bit to the left (or so they thought) and voted for Obama. And now Obama has his twenty something percent of the populace cheering him on, as he is a black man, and he has a "D" after his name. So what if the economic "recovery" measures under him are leaving us jobless, homeless and very far from any recovery? He is such a soft spoken man with such a sweet personality.

This nation is hopelessly locked inside a "cult of personality."

14. +1 for the sentiment even if it may be a little off
Was looking for more information about inverted totalitarianism and found his interview with Thom Hartmann. Anyway, thought it as worth reading, just posted several paragraphs but more good insights imo at the link.

Chris Hedges: Yeah. It’s the story of an America that has transferred its allegiance to spectacle, to pseudo-events, that no longer can determine what is real and what is illusion, that confuses how they’re made to feel with knowledge, that confuses propaganda with ideology, and that’s exceedingly dangerous. All totalitarian societies are image-based societies, and that’s what our society has become.

Chris Hedges: Yeah. You’re not interrupting me, you’re not insulting me, you’re not shouting. It’s not carnival barking. You use the airwaves to actually try and discuss ideas and allow your guests to flesh out opinions, opinions that you may not even agree with. That’s very different from almost everything we see. And look, newspapers are dying, the publishing industry is dying, you have 42 million Americans who are illiterate. You have another 50 million Americans who are semi literate, meaning they read at a 4th of 5th grade level. And then you have people who are functionally literate, but they don’t read. There are tremendous consequences for that, because as you well know, having worked in the advertising industry, these images are not benign. They are skillfully orchestrated and manipulated by for-profit corporations to get us to do a lot of things that are not in our interests. And of course, this all ties into the rise of celebrity culture, well on display with our 3 week coverage of the death of Michael Jackson.

Chris Hedges: Well, Sheldon Wolin, the great political philosopher who taught at Berkeley and later Princeton, now 86, has written his sort of magnum opus called, “Democracy Incorporated.” And he argues that we live in a system that he calls inverted totalitarianism. The classical totalitarianism, in classical totalitarianism, like fascism or communism, economics is always subordinate to politics. But in inverted totalitarianism, politics is subordinate to economics. And with a rise of the consumer society, with the commodification of everything, including human beings and natural resources, you have built into it a form, an inevitable form of self annihilation. Because nothing has intrinsic value when society is no longer recognized as sacred. You exhaust everything for their, for its ability to make money. No matter how much human misery you create, no matter how much you go, how far you go to destroy the ecosystem that is sustaining the human species. And that with the rise of celebrity culture, of consumer culture, and on federate capitalism, you get what Benjamin Demott has called, I think quite correctly, junk politics.
