A photo essay on the military presence in our nation's capital.

On a recent trip to Washington DC, I was struck by the constant signs of
militarism, beyond the obvious examples of the Pentagon, Arlington
Cemetery and all the military personnel with desk jobs at the Pentagon
walking around in combat fatigues.

1. Actually I think what you're seeing is the Corp. machine selling to all the Pentagoners who Metro.

There are a huge number of high level decision makers and lesser functionaries who use the DC Metro to get to their jobs at and around the Pentagon.

So it just makes good business sense to keep the ole' Military Industrial complex going to advertise to those people.

I'm pretty sure Lockheed Martin doesn't care what we think of their products. We are far removed from the money shovels that blow our tax dollars fighting last century's war.

3. It is much more than thay I've seen when I worked at the Pentagon 20 years ago

Since then, a lot of military contractors have moved to Northern VA, they're all over the place.

The military's budget has exploded in the intervening years. It happened even during peacetime. And the money ISN'T going to the troops, because their rolls have decreased since the end of the Cold War.

It's going to these corporations, who are building more and more expensive and sophisticated weapon systems... Many of them originally designed to fight the Soviet Union, but have been re-purposed for the so called Global War On Terror.

By the way, it's all a freaking scam. And we're all paying the price for it.
