IDK I like Maher, we all know he has very opinionated views on religion that's very blunt. Some of it's funny, but this interview seemed somewhat arrogant and elitist even from Bill Maher (even though he's said much worse). How is this any different from Erik Prince who also slandered Middle Eastern culture as barbaric in so many ways...news brought forth by Jeremy Scahill who has been disgusted by the comments. I wonder how Scahill would feel about THIS interview by someone who is also supposed to be liberal?

1. He makes sense to me.
Far too much of the religion is violent in some way or another.

There are many, many peaceful Muslims in the U.S. That is not the case in much of the Middle East and in parts of Europe.

It's not arrogant or elitist. He's stating the simple truth.

2. I don't see calling things what they are as bashing.
There is truth in what he said. The religious fundamentalist mindset is a primitive and often violent mindset.

3. Join?
I think he is a charter member. And it isn't exclusive to Islam, he'll bash Catholicism, Protestants, Scientologists, and Hindus too. He's an equal opportunity skewerer of ALL religion.

6. OMG at the responses...
How many of you know actual Muslims or have talked to them about this? Instead of what you're being told to believe by the MSM. I suggest some of you check out The Real News Network pieces on this subject. Wow.

And that goes for Christians, Jews, and yes, Muslims too.

9. Maher is an equal opportunity basher
and says much the same thing about all religions, everywhere.

Eric Prince, on the other hand, is a Christian soldier, a crusader who has delusions of building a private god's army to fight on Jesus's side come Armageddon.

Maher hates religion, period. Prince hates any religion that doesn't agree with him.

10. Disgusting racist propagandistic garbage
I find the responses here disheartening too. I would love to believe people see through this type of crap, but apparently not. How can anyone in their right mind look around at what's happening in the world and say that Islam is the violent menace? It's absurd beyond belief. Is no one keeping track of the body count anymore? To paraphrase the dearly missed George Carlin - brown people of the world, watch out for those blue eyes. Or to quote him precisely:

"The blue eyes! Those blue eyes! Boy, everybody in the world learned real quick that when those blue eyes sail out of the north, you'd better nail everything down, motherfucker! Nail it down! Strap it down or they'll grab it! If they can't take it home, they'll burn it! If they can't burn it, they'll fuck it!"

Btw, very perceptive of you to bring up Eric Prince -- no substantive difference IMO. And yes, I would love to hear Jeremy Scahill's thoughts on this and I hope he'll stop his appearances on Maher's show. Scahill is too good for the likes of Maher. Let him stick to booking all his MANY ultra-right-wing good pals.

18. Stop reading corporate media
Look for alternative sources of information.

If you think more Muslims are killed by suicide bombers than the American War Machine(tm), you need better info.

19. He is NOT equally critical of all religions
His criticisms of other religions are nothing compared to his Muslim-bashing. He consistently portrays them as almost sub-human.

On the other hand, he does not tolerate anything but he gentlest, most toothless criticism of Israel. You figure it out.

23. I don't see anything arrogant or elitist...
...about expressing an honest opinion coming from an atheist. I think he's right, in that despite the millions upon millions of peace loving Muslims out there in the world, that the fundamentalists who come from that religion are nothing more than murderous thugs who would gas to death a bunch of young girls for getting educated at a school. And to be quite honest, part of the reason why some of these Muslim extremists hate us and want to blow us up is quite simple: BECAUSE WE ARE OCCUPYING THEIR LANDS FOR OIL. We're sending out drone planes which have killed entire innocent families. And all we can say is "oops, sorry about that." Our actions over there are starting to create some homegrown terrorism right here. Bill said recently that the ugliest side of any religious extremist in our country are those folks from the Westborough Baptist Church who carry signs that say God hates Fags and protest at the funerals of our fallen soldiers. But I don't see them making death threats and blowing up innocent little girls because they want to learn out to read. I mean, c'mon, folks. As an American, I may not like some of the sh!t going on in our country. Hell, I don't even like some of the stuff Obama has done lately. But we aren't that crazy that we'd have a group of militant religious murderers running around killing innocent people the way the Taliban of Al Qaeda have done to people who practice the same religion they do.

The solution I think is quite simple. Get out of Afghanistan, and get out of Iraq as soon as possible. Bring more of our troops home from overseas, cut spending on the military, and let's start actually taking care of ALL of our own people, not just the richest bastards who get away with their own brand of financial murder.

24. Fundamentalist Christians make death threats all the time
A helpful link someone posted in another thread here on DU:

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/04/26/douthat/index.html

And while I'm at it, here's an article that addresses Maher's bogus claim that the Quran is more violent than the Bible or other religious texts:

25. Dookiestix: Yes there are fundamentalists, but think for a second
Edited on Mon May-10-10 01:28 AM by Bullet1987
that you're talking about a small minority of Muslims. If as many muslims posed as much a threat to the U.S. as they want you to believe, we'd be in a much more major situation than we currently are. Do you know how many Muslims there are? It's also funny how Maher and people like him always bring up the crusades when attacking Islam, but never al-Andalus (Moorish Spain) where the sciences and arts flourished for hundreds of years and Jews, Muslims, and Catholics co-existed for a period of time. But telling that intellectual side of the story destroys the whole "Islam is backwards and primitive" argument doesn't it.

34. the Moors occupied Spain the same way we occupied Iraq.
Ask the Spaniards today what they think about the 700 year period of Muslim oppression. Oh, they gave Spain culture? One, that's a slur on the rich, unique Visigothic/Iberian culture that already existed there, and two, if occupier culture was good for Spain, then American culture must be good for Iraq. After all, we brought them democracy.

31. What if Christianity and Judaism were the law?
It takes a secular society and laws to temper the hate of religious zealots. Neither Christianity nor Judaism is without sin or a sinful nature. Given the freedom and power, both would resort to its sinful nature.
