1. OK, Seems Like It Might be Promising
but where are there 5,000-foot-long conical nets to be obtained? Unless they're sitting on a shelf somehwere, they would have to be manufactured. What would be the lead time to order, manufacture, and deliver? Does not seem like a quick fix for an emergency.

2. Well, as he points out, he's not an engineer...
It would be interesting to see how long this permeable funnel would last in the Gulf current, and what would happen to that permeability when the fabric gets clogged with crude oil...

3. there have been some engineers
talking about this over at Eric's post on Daily Kos, they can answer you far better than I can: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2010/5/9/864974/-BP-Oil-Spill-Solution:-The-Permeable-Cone-Stocking-UPDATED

8. The Permeability Seemed Like a Good Idea
but what BP engineers are grappling with are measures that can be implemented now in a period of hours or days with materials on hand or easily adapted.

4. yes...
It could take a while to build. However, best to start working on multiple solutions now, in case the ones they are currently trying fail. Also good to think about manufacturing this for future leaks as well.

12. Curtain fabric might work. We could all donate our old curtains.
Edited on Mon May-10-10 04:18 PM by JDPriestly
I have lots of them. Then there are lace tablecloths.

Actually, if you every see little girls in tutus. The netting that they use to make the tutus stick out might work. Back in the 1950s, we wore this stuff under skirts. We called it crinoline. It is probably still used to give formal gowns some fullness. There are different grades of it including a pretty fine grade. Must be lots of it around. It would probably be easy to manufacture pretty quickly. There is also cheesecloth. I suppose you would need a very heavy type, maybe even a burlap.

Also, I buy a plastic netting to use in gardening. (I use old curtains and the tutu netting also.) The grade I buy for gardening is too porous, but I have no doubt that there are finer grades.

The problem is that no matter what you put in the ocean, some of it, maybe even all of it is likely to stay in the ocean.

I wonder whether they could use robots of some sort. I suppose the robots would not have a chance in the water, but then, maybe there is some way to put the robots in a big container with video cameras so that the robots could actually cement the thing and put a plug on it.

5. they might use something strong/light, like ripstop material - used for hot air balloons

a mile of fabric is a huge issue, but if they can test the freeze-over issue with a hot air balloon open on both ends (readily available), they might be able to run the theory of large containment in practice before going forward. It would certainly be something to test along the way

13. Yes, Humiliating isn't it, BP. Ordinary people and artists may
have answers to questions too tough for you to handle. My, my. Do you still think you are worth those megasalaries?

11. Sock making machines can quickly spin long fabric tubes with no seems.
Edited on Mon May-10-10 04:12 PM by tridim
I bet they could build a large one in a few days and start spinning immediately.

I also bet someone has already built one.

21. I have no control
Over someone else's technology. It was recorded over Skype because we are in completely separate states, that was the only camera Eric had, and that was the first time Eric ever used Skype. So how do you suggest to fix that?
