May 26, 2010 — Ben's experiment using 3 lines of milk jugs with "Whiffle" ball like holes to collect the oil. This is something all people could do to help with the oil spill clean up effort.

This looks like a good idea.

1. And how would one dispose of the soiled jugs?
Throw the toxic mess into a landfill? Burn it?

2. Good question
Landfill is the worst choice, although that is probably what is happening with all the bags that the guys in HAZMAT suits are generating. Burning it is a much better solution, gets rid of the volatile organics, but the problem there is getting it to burn clean and hot. Plastic and oil are prone to incomplete burning, resulting in a lot of soot and toxic combustion by-products, like dioxin.

The best thing to do is to absorb it onto some plant matter and let it sit for the bacteria and fungi to break down.

3. A big compay needs to pick up this idea
Instead of milk jugs, in order to effectively pick up a large amount of oil, it seems the jugs should be huge like the size of a big garbage cans. Then when full boats can drag them away and dispose of the oil/tar balls were the normally are disposed of.

4. can't the oil be spun out of the water?
then refined to be used in oil fired power plants.

I'm not an oil engineer or anything like that, but it seems to be a reasonable idea.

jeeez, we gotta do something with 300,000,000 gallons of water tainted oil somehow.

5. Containment is better than dispersal.
Especially dispersal with toxic agents. Something like this on a large scale could make a very real difference.
