I believe they, to varying degrees, THINK they are superior in every sense including morally, but deep down they know they are only in it for the money. They play a role to mislead the American public into fear of government (especially a Democratic one), love of Corporocracy, and a hatred of the "other". All this to divide the population, keep them fighting, so there is no clear chance of revolt by the majority.
