You can pay for food and shelter and maybe gas to look for another job, but you'll have other bill collectors dunning you day and night. Try living on the same amount of money that the average unemployment recipient ears for six months. See how you like it.

Fact is, in my state you are not eligible for unemployment unless you have worked for a certain number of months or years (not sure which), you were laid off not fired for cause and you sign an affidavit that you are actively looking for work, an affidavit which the department giving you the money has the right to investigate. (You have to keep a record of the jobs you apply for.)

Then, in my state, when you start to get unemployment, it is far, far less than you received when you worked at your last job. It is a pittance. You can't pay a mortgage and eat, much less drive a car or cover the cost of health insurance with it. You just barely survive on your savings. Unemployment is a supplement, but you probably can't live on it.

Anybody who has had any contact with unemployment at all knows she's so out of touch with reality she belongs in a psychiatric hospital,...

A study released in 2001 by the U.N. stated workers in the US put in the longest hours among industrialized nations. I don't think hard work and values are the sole property of one political party. And I would like to think that compassion isn't either.
