Here is video of former President Bill Clinton saying that the 1st priority of the U.S. Government in the Gulf Crisis is to "fix the leak." Looking for someone to blame should be put off until the leak is fixed, most of the oil is prevented from reaching shore, and until the oil that reaches shore is cleaned up. Only then, he said, should the focus be on holding people accountable.

Clinton also said it may become necessary for the U.S. Navy to "blow up the well" to stop the leak on the floor of the Gulf. He said that can be done without using a Nuclear Weapon.

1. Isn't BP just a few weeks or days away from getting the relief well installed?
Not saying they are for sure, but why take the chance no making it worse when we appear to be so close?

4. relief wells
Relief wells are likely to come in mid-August.

There is no guarantee they will work. It is the most proven way to stop a flowing well; in fact it is basically the *only* way to stop a flowing well. It still isn't always successful.

I give the entire dynamic kill effort somewhere between 60% to 80% chance of working. Blowing up the well is an option but it would be a whole other kind of crapshoot.

12. One relief well is fairly close, but the progress will slow
as they get closer as they have to be extremely accurate to hit the target. They are still on schedule for mid Aug, provided a hurricane(s) does not cause delays.

9. I seriously doubt Clinton has any inkling what he is talking about.
Blowing something up results in creating smaller pieces or weakening a structure.

10. It's been done before.
Even with nukes. Basically, you put it someplace lateral to the well, off to the side. The explosion doesn't actually penetrate the well, the rock is shoved sideways and cuts off the well.

I suppose you could probably do it with a really big conventional bomb, but nuclear would be better.

14. All I can see happening is caused fractures around the well
creating additional openings for the oil to leak out.

17. It would seem so, but since it's not an open air explosion
it all goes into heat, which fuzes the rock. Kind of nifty the way it has played out in the past. Whether or not it would work here probably depends on what kind of rock the sea floor is, and how much 'play' you have above and below the point you choose to detonate the bomb.

Questions I hope the Army Corps of Engineers is working on, in case the relief wells fail.

20. what about the fragility of the bedrock and possibility of a large amt. of methane
being released?

Talk about nightmare if that happened.

21. Agreed.
However, I know of no 'safe' way to stop this leak. If the initial problem, as BP claimed, was the pressure was too great for the BOP to stop, what guarantee do we have that the pressure won't simply blow out the two relief wells as well?

18. My favorite celebrity physicist
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 05:20 PM by 90-percent
My favorite celebrity physicist, Dr. Michio Kaku, repudiated the "nuke-the-well" option quite concisely on Keith Olbermann a month or so ago.

Bill Clinton should take a taxi over to City College and have a quick chat with Michio. He won't be so ignorant next time after spending a while with my favorite TV physicist.

Oh, and Bill Nye the Science Guy is my favorite celebrity mechanical engineer.
