I hate to say this, but this is a slimy, desperate attempt to smear Jindal with what is a mainstream Catholic Academic essay.
For example, the claim that Jindal said that non-Catholics have "utterly depraved minds" twists the fact that Jindal was quoting John Calvin. This is significant because many of the Southern Baptists that Jindal was supposedly insulting are Calvinists and would heartily agree with the assessment that humans are "utterly depraved" (this is a foundational belief of Calvinism).
The Kos commentary is embarrassing. He doesn't even read what Jindal wrote. Kos interprets Jindal:
Summary: Catholicism is infallible, all other religions are burdened with utterly depraved minds subject to subjective interpretations leading to anarchy and heresy.
- Jindal says in the excerpt that the Catholic Church's collation of the Christian canon was infallible. Does Kos think that the rest of Christianity, who adheres to this canon is going to think that the Catholic Church screwed up by, for example, ditching the Gospel of Judas?
- Jindal doesn't say "all other religions," he said, "individual Christians," which is entirely different.
- The attribution of "utterly depraved minds" is a reference to a Calvinist belief which many, many non-Catholics hold and would agree with.
- What Kos shrilly lampoons as an endorsement of authoritarianism is merely Jindal making an appeal to the consistency of having a catholic (little "c") faith. The word "catholic" simply means "unified." That doesn't necessarily mean monolithic. There are lots of different opinions and attitudes among us Democrats, but do those include those of Joe Lieberman and Lyndon LaRouche who call themselves "Democrats"? DU kicks people out for espousing what amounts to heresy. I support that policy, doesn't everyone? We don't have to be in lock-step, but there is some unity in what we all support here.
I could go on.
It is immensely stupid to run this campaign, as it relies on people not knowing anything about Catholic beliefs in a state where one out of three people are Catholic. Worse yet, the Catholics are largely Democratic.
This ad is also hoping to leverage some of the outrage over the Pope's recent comments about the "true" church, which caused great consternation among evangelical Christians. The problem with that is that the people who were most upset by this were people who would never vote for a Democrat in the first place.
Bottom line is that playing Catholics against evangelicals fires up the wrong people in the wrong direction. The polls have Jindal with a commanding lead and this may make it insurmountable.
The Freepers will be crowing over the fall of Blanco, who they blame for making Bush look bad in the Katrina aftermath. They will interpret the success of a Republican as a vindication of Bush. As usual, the Freepers will be right for the wrong reasons, but they'll be crowing nonetheless.
