3. On the one hand, we should be glad they cherry-pick the Bible.
We'd be overrun with ridiculous laws and an epidemic of fundamentalists ruining perfectly good days if the Bible were taken literally.

However, on the other hand, one would think the obviousness of the cherry-picking that goes on, it would wake more people up. But it takes a certain kind of fortitude to question and reject long-standing traditions. Especially one that threatens eternal damnation for peaking outside the covers.

It just shows that even the most staunch fundamentalist has his limits to taking "The Word of God" at its word.

4. That was excellent, Cenk!

There is a lot of picking and choosing when it comes to biblical passages. The loudest proponents of the Old Testament are the most skilled at conveniently leaving out inconvenient passages. :fistbump:

28. Read while enebriated, Leviticus is hilarious
You should also go see Betty Bowers take on Leviticus and so many other topics (www.bettybowers.com). You can trust her because she is America's Best Christian.

7. So it says something in the Bible
Edited on Wed Aug-04-10 02:28 PM by AlbertCat
The Bible is not the law of this land, no matter how much you want it to be. But despair not, ye brotheren! The law of the land does not require you to abandon the Bible... because it does not REQUIRE you to get, have, attend or even watch a gay marriage, so...

If you don't like Gay Marriage.... don't have one.

While we're on the Bible...

The story they should also be telling is Sodom & Gomorrah. Yes, god smiteth the evil there and good ol' Lot and his family escaped.... except for Mrs. Lot who turned into a pillar of sodium chloride.

But the story doesn't end there!

Keep reading, brotheren and sisteren!

Big Lot's 2 daughters, now living alone with Dad in the wilderness, are worried they won't find husbands in the middle of nowhere and won't have children. So they plot together. 1st they get daddy drunk, then they RAPE HIM while he's passed out, inseminating themselves so they can bear children.

So, beware homosexuality my children! But incestuous rape is a-ok with god!

Thus endeth the lesson.

9. My favorite Christian response to the shrimp argument
is that not only can you pick and choose which parts of the Bible "speak to you", but that you should do so. It's not like one believes the earth is flat and has corners because they read the Bible, right?

But that means that in choosing to be against homosexuality, you're very much choosing that part of the Bible over things that are mentioned in the same section. And the only explanation for that is a prejudiced preconception that being gay is bad. And then saying they shouldn't have the same rights is a step further into prejudice, to the point of discrimination. These anti-gay Christians are bad news. You can't hide behind the Bible on this one.

point in a very potent way. Not that it'll make a dent in the thick skulls of the fundies, but it could reach those who still retain the ability to reason.

22. I think banning divorce would do the most to uphold traditional marriage
but something tells me that that's not what these trad-marriage folks mean when they say "attack on marriage".

This is more about jamming their religious beliefs down everyone else's throats.
