1. Demagogues have always been with us
usually in tent revival meetings. As Marjoe Gortner's film back in the 70s informed us so well, they've always been carnival hucksters who think the faithful are marks.

The film was a perfect character study of those guys, hungry guys who start out with a shtik and start to believe it after it makes them rich and famous.

Gortner was different only because he grew a conscience when he grew up and went on one last revival tour just to expose the whole thing. As far as I know, the film, shown on PBS in the late 70s, hasn't seen the light of day since then.

2. This was on tv Thursday night
I watched it and was floored by the parallels to you-know-who. Now I understand why Olbermann calls him Lonesome Roads.
