Christine O'Donnell Says U.S. Hasn't Finished Job Of Fighting 'Soviets' In Afghanistan (VIDEO)
Christina Bellantoni | October 13, 2010, 8:58PM

Republican Senate nominee Christine O'Donnell tonight totally confused the United States' history with Afghanistan when talking about the Obama administration's plan to withdraw troops from the country.

She complained that Obama and Democratic nominee Chis Coons are advocating something dangerous by proposing a drawdown of troops begin next summer.

"A random withdrawal, that he has said he supports, will simply embolden the terrorists to come after us even more, saying, 'I've chased away the superpower,'" O'Donnell said during a nationally televised debate hosted by CNN at the University of Delaware.

But her description of the United States' role in Afghanistan in the 1980s came out a bit garbled:

Well if you remember when we were fighting the Soviets over there in Afghanistan in the '80s and '90s, we did not finish the job, so now we have a responsibility to finish the job and if you are gonna make these politically correct statements that it's costing us too much money, you are threatening the security of our homeland.

She also briefly confused Iraq and Afghanistan. Coons corrected her.

Asked if the country is more secure now than it was under President George W. Bush, Coons said "Yes" and O'Donnell said "No."

11. Meh. This is weak sauce.
She didn't say we are fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan now. What she seemed to have meant is that we left a mess in Afghanistan that we now have to finish cleaning up. which is true (except our "need" to do anything about it).

On the other hand, the people we are supposedly fighting in Afghanistan now are our former allies. So . . . that doesn't make much sense either.

16. I agree
we left and the Taliban moved in and took over. Not to mention that we used the Taliban to help fight the Soviets. If we stayed and help build the country up, we'd probably would have ended up fighting the Taliban earlier which could have saved the Afgan people a lot of pain. Hindsight is 20/20.
As for Christine, I don't hate her. I think she's way better than Palin, but still she's not Senate material.

25. Huh?
We did not leave a mess in Afghanistan, the Soviets did. We are not cleaning up any mess that we previously left in Afghanistan.

20. Only an advancing empire needs a word like "homeland",.
the use of the word arises from the fact that the USA is an expansionist empire,. all of which fall.

I was expecting a dose of Palin-style stupid, but she doesn't say we're still fighting the Russians. Her grammar does imply that we were fighting the Russians (that is us, rather than the Afghans who we were supplying) but I agree with what she's trying to say: After the Russians pulled out Afghanistan might as well have not existed as far as our government was concerned. The time to do something with Afghanistan was then, but we left a bunch of crazies -armed to the teeth with American military gear- free to run wild. Anyone with even a tenth of an ounce of foresight should have known what would happen.

27. A very creative interpretation of her exact words, I must say! And I must ask you
why are you bothering to try to make sense out of those words coming out of her mouth?

The exact transcript of the words is out there in print. And the sanctimonious attitude she displays toward Coons is obvious.
She's a confused egotistical little girl, with a head that can't learn or remember facts.
There's no need to respect that kind of a candidate, nor office-holding politician, either.

26. She is dumber than Palin, I am beginning to think. NO, I know she is!
She is just a con-artist, a grifter like Palin Has been all her life. I'm sure anyone doing a book on her would find a pattern of her conning her way through everything in life.

Why would anyone with two courses to go to get a BA degree wait 14 years to finish, when she was not married, didnt have kids, and was lying about her BA for all those years? Why, because she honestly was just too stupid to think that someone wouldn't find out.
