More info: "U.S. House freshman from Florida takes on the hat rule" (Miami Herald, 11/29/10). That freshman is Frederica Wilson, successor to Kendrick Meek, the incumbent House Rep for FL-17 and unsuccessful US Senate candidate for Florida.

1. Didn't anyone ever teach her its rude to wear a hat indoors?
Really? Isn't there anything more important things congress could be discussing, beside whether its against the rules to wear hat in congress?

6. Traditionally womens hats were exempt from such rules
Then again I have not seen a "traditional" hat on a woman in many years

8. WHY is it rude to wear a hat indoors?
Rude is picking your nose and wiping it on the person sitting next to you. Wearing a hat indoors is just---wearing a hat indoors. Why isn't wearing a tie outdoors rude? Or wearing brown on a Thursday rude? Or wearing silver cufflinks on alternate Tuesdays outdoors rude? I tell you, we humans have come up with some pretty insane rules. Perhaps the whole hat thing had a purpose once, but whatever it was, it has certainly outlived its usefulness.
