David Silverman, president of the American Atheist Group, went on Tuesday's "O'Reilly Factor" to defend the billboard ads his group has put up around the country calling religion a scam.

O'REILLY: I'll tell you why (religion's) not a scam, in my opinion: tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can't explain that.
SILVERMAN: Tide goes in, tide goes out?
O'REILLY: See, the water, the tide comes in and it goes out, Mr. Silverman. It always comes in, and always goes out. You can't explain that.

You might not be able to tolerate the stupid index here. It's at run from the room screaming levels.

6. I'm an atheist and I don't like David Silverman. (I hate O'reilly too, but that another matter.)
Silverman is not doing us any favors. It doesn't make us look good if we're ridiculing the 80%-90% of people who believe in God, and if it causes a backlash, it hurts our cause. Of course, we need to be vehement in standing against certain aspects of religion. I'll be harsh in opposing anyone who, because of his or her faith, is anti-gay, prejudiced against people of other religions or any other group, is misogynist, or is anti-science. However, there are plenty of religious people who don't hold any of those feelings. There are plenty of religious people who are very pro-science, with the understanding that science and religion are two different things. Plenty of religious people support the equality of homosexuals and gay-marriage. Plenty hold no prejudicial feelings against people or other religions, or women, or any other group. For those whose faith is so benign, or in some cases even a positive (e.g. motivating them to help the poor, etc), why oppose them? We are often on the same side.

7. I'm agnostic and I feel insulted by "You know it's a scam."
I don't like people telling me what I think, not even if they're right but certainly not if they're wrong.

8. Exactly.
Sometimes Christians tell me, "You KNOW the bible is true, but you just want to deny it so you can live your life as you choose." That's an idiotic, ignorant, and insulting statement. But this guy is being every bit as idiotic, ignorant, and insulting when he says, "you KNOW it's a scam," or, "you KNOW it's a myth."

9. exactly
people who believe TOTALLY believe. He should have just said that it is a myth (leave out the "you know"). Many bible stories have origins in ealier religions, which can be proven.

11. belief in fiction as fact is too dangerous to overlook,. .
no matter how morally good some cultists act, if they believe in utter fiction, and hold those beliefs as fact,. then they are dangerous. Shout them down at every opportunity, ridicule is a valid responce to idiacy.

12. These things are supposed to be
private matters. Public atheism is as offensive as public religion.

13. Go David Go
I'm an atheist, I like David a lot. I met him in Washington at the March in 2002, and I know Ellen Johnson his predecessor (hottie), and I knew the communications director of AA back then too. If you want to see someone being offensive to the religious, find Ron (can't remember his last name) communications director speaking at the Godless American's March on Washington in 2002.(cspan video available, but I don't have the link) David is very moderate in his disdain.

People say there is no evidence for or against god. This is nearly true. Because we have mountains of scientific evidence about the nature of the universe, biology, evolution, neuroscience, geology, etc etc. And you know what. There is no god there. No trace of god there. It is consistent in a naturalistic and materialistic worldview.

We also have tons of evidence about the nature of social morality, and the understanding that all social species have "rules" about how the individuals in those societies behave with the society as a whole. From bee hives, to wolf packs, to troupes of gorillas, social species have social order.

We also know that scripture has some pretty poetry and a few pearls of wisdom, but can be corrupted for massive injustices, killings, and wars. It also has small sins that burrow inside the mind of young believers who think they need to ask god's forgiveness for being attracted to people of the same gender and or touching themselves.

Finally, faith is a delusion. That's also not an insult. The correct psychiatric diagnosis for faith is delusion. The stronger the faith, the greater the delusion. Why doesn't faith get you into the nut house? Because the DSM (Diagnostic Statistical Manual of psychiatric disorders) says that when a bunch of people within a culture share the same delusion, don't lock them up. Have your faith, just have the strength to admit that faith has a diagnosis that you are getting a free pass on.

I don't know about faith moving mountains, but I've seen what it does to skyscrapers.

14. It's all about capitalism
Mormons are instructed to frequent businesses that are owned by mormons. This is how they build economic power.
