Edited on Fri Jan-07-11 02:54 PM by Frustratedlady
I hope he continues to be a burr under their saddles for the rest of this term. He is too swift for them.

This issue should have been brought up and those two should have been punished. To stand before a TV to be sworn in was ridiculous. I know one was partying...what was the other doing, or should I ask?

They both looked like schoolboys when they were being sworn in. This isn't a kids' clubhouse, you know.

"The House approved the resolution 257 to 159, with Sessions, Fitzpatrick and one Democrat voting "present." Only 27 Democrats sided with Republicans."

guy leaning over to her right.

Thanks to Weiner's request for a tally, the thugs' chicanery failed & it was voted that Sessions' illegal voting be thrown out. Weiner ROCKS.

49. Presiding officers are usually freshman representatives.
It's been the tradition of the House that the members of congress who hold the speakers gavel be selected from among newly elected members, especially during the beginning of a Congressional term when there are mostly pro-forma measures being considered. The purpose of this tradition is to "show them the ropes," or get them directly accustomed with the rules and procedures of the House up close. The Senate has a similar tradition.

The person you hear "feeding" instructions to the presiding officer is either the House Parliamentarian or someone from that office. If you watch Congress over the next few months you'll likely see similar scenes of the presiding officer looking for instructions from the Parliamentarian. So she was't doing anything wrong or displaying atypical levels of ignorance for a member of Congress.

What if those two congressmen had been Democrats? Think you would hear the Rethugs invoking Thomas Jefferson's name and breaking their own rules to just let it slide?

Hah! They would be calling 911 and screaming that they will immediately open up an investigation and probably calling for impeachment!

63. If ever there was symbolic "pulling back of the curtain", it was the "vote" at the end
The nays had it. They were certainly louder. They may well have been more numerous. But instead of giving it to the nays and forcing the ayes to call for a recorded vote, she gave it to the ayes and forced Rep. Weiner to call for a recorded vote.

The curtain got pulled way back on that one.

Banana Republic. That's what we are now.

65. I'm angry with Republicans too...
Edited on Sat Jan-08-11 01:51 PM by tabashco
but attacking the speaker on "procedure" is exactly the thing that made most of us so angry with them in the past. In the house, the Speaker is the presiding officer, and this is not abnormal for a Democratic speaker either. The Speaker (of either party) routinely announces the outcome of a vote based on their particular position on a bill no matter the perceived outcome in the gallery. I would hope that we would have faith in our elected officials to call for recorded votes when needed. Representative Weiner, and other members who champion the progressive cause in Congress are not going to sit by and do nothing while they still have recourse to further the democratic process.

tl;dr: The speaker (Democrats too!) announces votes based on their position; Anthony Weiner is a badass; The Repubs hold so many deplorable positions we don't need to attack them on procedure.

Edit to clarify: the "procedure" I'm referring to is the parliamentary procedure used by the Speaker, I believe that the 4-minute rule this resolution was brought up under is a valid procedural concern
