Watch Cenk on MSNBC from 6-7pm Eastern (3-4pm PT) weekdays.

Summary: MSNBC host Cenk Uygur on how the House Judiciary Committee passed a resolution to reaffirm 'In God We Trust' as the national motto of the United States. Also, tea party backed Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) made outrageous comments on how as people become more dependent on government they become less dependent on God.

1. There is no god or corrupt people like Demint would not
be in power.

I always thought it said that it was easier for a camel to pass the eye of a needle than a rich man to get into heaven. So why are the repugs claiming god is on their side?

This is one screwed-up country.

34. Religion has been a tool of conquest from the beginning --
and it's a landmine left behind in our societies that prevents us from

coming together --

Organized patriarchal religion is the underpinning for patriarchy --

GOP financed the start up of the Christian Coalition -- Richard Scaife funded

Dobson's organization -- and other wealthy elites funded Bauer's group --

Why?

"I realized that in this country we had a revolution--of housing, food, hair style, clothing, cosmetics, transportation, value systems, religion--it was an economic revolution, affecting the cosmetics industry, canned foods, the use of land; people were delivering their own babies, recycling old clothes, withdrawing from spectator sports. They were breaking the barriers where white and black could rap in 1967. This was the year of the Beatles, the summer of Sergeant Pepper, the Monterey Pop Festival, Haight-Ashbury, make your own candle and turn off the electricity, turn on with your friends and laugh--that's what life was all about."

http://maebrussell.com/Mae%20Brussell%20Articles/Ballad%20of%20Mae%20Brussell.html

What the right wing likes to try to reduce to a "sexual" revolution was a real revolution

by youth in America.

5. I wonder: Does he really believe that?
Other than some totally fundie driven pols like Keyes or Huckabee, I see most types making noise of this nature as plutocrats basically playing the southern strategy and pandering/distracting to a group whose votes they badly need. Even if he himself is religious, he knows damned well that that angle will not resonate with the vast majority. He's basically trying to stitch together a coalition of religious nuts, union hating troglodytes, and racists enough for critical mass. It is to this end, that it's really a sign of being desperate. Years ago, they'd reject such themes out of decorum. Even the 1st Bush campaign rejected a proposed ad showing a comparison photo of a youthful Clinton in his war protesting garb vs. George Bush in his WW2 USN pilot uniform as appearing too desperate. Today they just double down on the crazy.

Let him try it. It might work in SC ( for now ) but it'll be an epic fail nationwide.

9. Remember how Jack Abramoff manipulated the fundies?
Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 07:37 PM by RufusTFirefly
He got a bunch of fundamentalists riled up and organized to oppose the building of a new casino. What the fundies didn't realize was that Abramoff's client was a competing casino that didn't want any competition.

I suspect that most of the politicians who use God as a talking point are doing it to cynically manipulate their constituents, many of whom are true believers. The pious-sounding pols don't actually believe what they're saying, but they know it works wonders at the ballot box.

24. Religious people are so easy to fool. I envy the republicans!
They don't even have to work at it! Here's the procedure:

1. Lie.
2. Have religious people believe the lie instantly and begin fighting furiously for the wrong side, against their own interests.

Unfortunately, we Democrats do not have a ready-made group of gullible simpletons who believe everything we say without a thought. We have to actually prove our points and make our case. And, when we do, the republicans lie about it and foolish religious Americans believe them right away.

I don't care if people want to believe in fairy tales. But I do object when this leads them to side with their corporate oppressors and overlords, blindly backing Profit over the needs of People like themselves.

lately, and of course you can count on me to let Cenk know if the TV make up is in good order. All good - they need to tone the grey shadow over his eyes tho! Thank GOD (heh) they toned down that dark foundation they were putting on him!

Cheers!

8. Not to mention that WHEN religions run society, FREEDOM shrinks completely to the point of being out
These guys have it backwards. Religion is the threat to Freedom. In fact, any place that has blasphemy laws or insists on religion being front and center you know is not free.

Our government, and all LIBERAL ENLIGHTENED governments, are there to preserve and protect freedom by protecting us against the dictates of religion, among other things.

But these delusional right wing nut cases don't know history, don't know what liberalism is, don't know science or philosophy.

They KNOW their singular brand of christian fundamentalist delusion is the only correct one and they are here to see it CRAMMED down everyone's else throat, whether they like it or not!!

The quality of life rapidly shrinks too. It's because religion is based on what you want, and what you feel. Reality could care less what you want or feel. You get what you get.

I bet it's mostly teabagger types who are giving you those dirty looks too, huh? Those "strict constitutionalists" who don't even realize the Pledge has not always the phrase "under God" in it. It was only added during a red scare in the 50s (We had a thread about this a while back:

These republicans are the worst f----ng despicable creeps on the planet. This is nothing more than political pandering and anyone who doesn't vote with them on this ridiculous waste of time will be vicously attacked as being an unbelieving, God-hating, latte drinking, queer loving, gun hating piece of crap that doesn't only not deserve to be in congress, but in their view probably shouldn't even be breathing.

23. These people believe in a really needy god with severe self esteem problems.
Imagine a god a trillion times smarter and more powerful than a human. Would such a deity care what a nation of talking racoons on a planet in galaxy M81 thinks about it? Surely it's sense of self-worth wouldn't depend on some politicians high regard for it.

What's really going on here is political pandering to the religious faithful. This was a simple, low cost way to prove that these politicians are willing to pander to that group of voters. It was a conscious demonstration of a form of corruption. But it's just lip service. The religious voters should be able to see that.

25. As far as I can tell, their "God" is a fellow right-wing asshole.
This deity they've made up appears to be different from the character named "God" in the well-known novel called "The Bible". This new made-up right-wing "God" appears to be hateful and bigoted, just like his followers. They are basically worshipping themselves. How typical!

30. There are some parts in the Old Testament that make the God character worse than any mobster.
Edited on Wed Mar-23-11 09:06 AM by tclambert
Look what He did to Job, just tortured that poor guy, all to settle a wager. And there's a bit where He instructs His followers that if they find a town where as few as five people are worshipping incorrectly, they should destroy the town, but not loot it. He tells them to burn all the loot, too, and kill and burn the cattle! The last part got Mark Twain's attention. He wondered why we should punish the cattle. What in the world did the cows do wrong?

31. Yes, I should have mentioned that.
The Old Testament "God" is vengeful and unforgiving, and seems angry most of the time. I have seen estimates of the number of people directly killed by this "God" ranging from 2 to 3 million. Then we have the New Testament "God" who is kindly and loving and all "turn the other cheek" - radically different from the other "God" in the very same infallible Bible.

Right-wingers naturally gravitate to the cruel, nasty old "God" and completely ignore the gentle, forgiving new "God", even though the new "God" is the one associated with their beloved Jesus. (They are "Christians", right?)

Have you ever noticed that right-wing religious nuts always want to post the Ten Commandments of the old "God" all over Creation, but never, ever post or even mention the Sermon On the Mount? Their Saviour's actual words fly in the face of their punitive, hateful right-wing ideology and thus must be suppressed and ignored. Some "Christians"!

33. Depend on god more than government
Edited on Wed Mar-23-11 11:11 AM by AlbertCat
Because those supernatural magical solutions are WAY better than anything a concrete, 3-D government could do for people. He's telling you if you have a problem, praying is better and more effective than anything HE could do for you. (that I believe!... and I believe prayer is useless.)

Of course, religion IS just ancient government.
