1. they should put the noise level on the other things too as a comparison.
i know the sound differentiates, but the actual decibils or something may give another differentiation.

2. Dunno about noise
but apparently there is a big issue with some catching fire. Its to do with the fact that there are no current greases which will cope sufficiently with the friction on the rotor.

4. Preventing wind turbine fires
Edited on Thu Mar-24-11 08:16 AM by forty6
There's several preventive solutions now available. Yes, they cost money up front, but can save the need for major repair or downtime.

Here is one commercially available solution I found Googling "preventing wind turbine fires".

A more comprehensive report from a European study can be found here:

8. That was something I came across by accident recently
Personally I've nothing against windfarms. We've got even more to come in the UK.

7. Nice!
I've stood in the middle of a wind farm in California. There was sound, to be sure, but it was much less than the trains that pass two blocks from my Saint Paul home several times a day, and those trains don't bother me, either. Some folks just don't like things.

9. Oil well pumps make more noise, refineries make more noise,

internal combustion engines in lawnmowers and snowblowers and motorbikes, motorcycles, motorcars, buses, trucks, ambulances, etc.

ALL MAKE MORE NOISE than a wind turbine. All pollute the atmosphere, too, some more than others. Wind turbines, only slight pollution in their manufacture, installation, and maintenance, but absolutely none from their normal operation and lots of electricity.

11. True. The prodaganda is heavy that only wind power is "too loud".

Edited on Thu Mar-24-11 07:51 PM by WhoIsNumberNone
They find nuclear power plants much more aesthetically pleasing.

15. If it isn't dirty or produce a foul odor, they don't want it.
They are strange people. So why are they kicking our ass in the pursuit of a sane energy policy? Must have something to do with their lack of morals and ethics - willing to do and say anything for a buck.
