business as usual for inexperienced subs in middle school. The kids will trample all over a sub until the sub puts a stop to it one way or another.

It is normal for me to go through nearly a whole pack of (24) pencils and loads of paper in a one to three day period in middle school. I tell students that anyone who was caught throwing ANYTHING across the room will be given a refferal to the dean and then follow through on the few who actually get caught.

The subject of the Pledge comes up on a regular basis. I tell the students that whether or not they do the Pledge is up to them, but, for courtesy's sake, they must respectfully remain quiet during the Pledge if they choose not to join in. I tell them to remember that for many people, the flag means the country and they can be very insulted when others disrespect the Pledge and/or the flag. I use the Olympics Metal Ceremony as an example. Everyone rises in respect to the playing of the National Anthem of the gold metal winners.

If they ask me my feelings, I will answer depending on my time and/or mood, as well as the maturity level of the students, that I am ambivalent; I'd rather pledge allegience to the Constitution, which is the foundation of laws that built this country, but could understand the need some have of a tangible symbol such as the flag.

Middle schools, for the most part, are difficult for subs as the kids test their boundries. I've been subbing in middles schools for a long time, and even I have times and classes that have me almost ready to throw in the towel. And the classes I sub in are predominately white with some black, some hispanic, and a few asian kids. There is no way I would blame the ethnicity of the students for their behavior the way this supposed sub did.

If she cannot look at the students as individuals as opposed to ambassadors of their ethnicity, she does not belong in the school system at all in any position.
