To call what the Hyde family has been through a "parent's worst nightmare" sounds like a horrible cliche. But, it's hard to imagine what else you could call it. Their two-year old son Cash was diagnosed last year with a stage 4 brain tumor; he nearly died more times than they can count. He was miserable from the chemotherapy coursing through his body. Until his dad made a controversial decision to give cannabis to his young son. KXLY 4's Melissa Luck reports.

They believed and they prayed. High-dose chemo was killing Cashy's cancer, but it was making him sicker than ever. He was taking 120 milligrams a day of five different drugs to make him comfortable. That, Mike said, wasn't helping to ease Cashy's pain.

"By the end of September, he had gone 40 days without eating, he was vomiting 9-10 times a day, he couldn't lift his head off his pillow, he was laying their shivering," Mike remembered, saying he would have given anything to trade place with his son. "The doctors came in and I said, is there anything I can do for Cash?"

The doctors had no answers, so Mike found his own. It was relief for Cashy in the form of cannabis oil. It's illegal to possess without authorization from a medical professional. It's something doctors wouldn't even discuss. Mike got authorization to give Cashy the oil and, without telling them why, told the doctors to wean Cashy off the anti-nausea cocktail. Inserted through Cashy's feeding tube, a tiny amount of oil replaced all those drugs. The result, Mike said, was almost immediate.

"You're watching a kid who hasn't had the will to eat in 4 months, 5 months, actually take a bite of something," Mike remembered. "He hadn't eaten a thing in 40 days - and, it was really incredible to watch him take a bit of a piece of cheese. It shows that he wants to live."

The child was given his last round of high dose chemotherapy without anti-nausea drugs due to MMJ.

Toddler, one of 51 kids using medical cannabis in MT

The Medical Marijuana Act says in order for children to get a card, they have to follow specific guidelines. It says they "shall issue a registry identification card to a minor if the custodial parent or legal guardian for the minor signs and submits a written statement that the minor's physician has explained the potential risks and benefits of the medical use of marijuana; the custodial parent or legal consents to the medical use of marijuana by the minor; agrees to serve as the minor's caregiver; and agrees to control the acquisition of marijuana and the dosage and frequency of the medical use of marijuana by the minor."

snip

One of the state's youngest medical cannabis card holders is Cash Hyde, a 2½-year old boy who battled a brain tumor and won. Cash's dad Michael Hyde says the drug helped Cash with his battle.

Cash's parents were there every step through his battle and watched as drugs prescribed by his doctors made him hallucinate and stop his heart. Cash's dad says medical cannabis helped rebuild his organs that were damaged from the chemo, helped with his appetite, and helped him sleep.

"I watched Cashy not be able to eat for over 40 days, live off nothing but fluid intravenously to the point where he couldn't lift his head up off his pillow, I realized along the way in this journey that there is a quality of life that a lot of people do not have, and it's because of the drugs that they're given," said Hyde.

Nation Reacts To Toddler Given Medical Marijuana
Melissa Luck | KXLY4 Executive Producer
http://www.kxly.com/news/27728174/detail.html

The medical marijuana raids in Spokane Thursday brought a strong reaction from patients.

Patients like 2 year old Cash Hyde depend on the drug for pain relief.

Hyde's dad gave him medical marijuana to help him through high-dose chemotherapy for a stage 4 brain tumor.

snip

"The only way for medical patients to benefit from cannabis is for us to have it legalized fully. Until it's fully legalized, police and law enforcement will continue to harass and invade patients' rights, and take their medicine away," Hyde said.

29. Thank you for posting this. And it is true pot may be the answer for
Bacteria created problems like antibiotic resistant Staph.

It is no wonder that the Big Pharma people keep the pressure on our elected officials to keep marijuana illegal. The more that the Big Pharma people research, the more they realize how cannibinoids could be worth billions each week to any business entity able to patent those cannibinoids.

31. It's only a matter of time before...
...the masses obtain this information. And when it comes to life and death issues--the people will not
stand for this. They will get pot somehow.

If my child got cancer, you can damn well bet that I would do whatever it would take to ease their
suffering, prolong life and maybe even cure them.

It's not long before big pharma's attempt to keep pot illegal--will fail. People will do it anyway, and
by that time, it won't matter if it's illegal or not. People using it for medical purposes, will have
impacted big pharma's profits.

It is at that point, that they will pay off our politicians to enact rules and legislation that enables
pharmaceutical companies to patent pot or be the sole distributors.

33. article: Is Big Pharma set to corner the American market on medical marijuana?
please click through to read the entire article with links to sources:

http://coloradoindependent.com/84936/is-big-pharma-set-to-corner-the-american-market-on-medical-marijuana

The Independent has previously reported on the growing corporatization of the incipient medical marijuana industry at a time when medical marijuana dispensaries scrabble to hold on to their businesses in the face of a multi-pronged federal crackdown. But there are signs afoot that it just may become ever more corporate if a Big Pharma push to get the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to recognize a cannabis-derived drug is successful.

Last week, British prescription drug manufacturer GW Pharmaceuticals announced a licensing agreement with drug giant Novartis http://www.gwpharm.com/GW%20Signs%20Exclusive%20Licence%20Agreement%20to%20Commercialise%20Sativex%20in%20Australia%20Asia%20Middle%20East%20and%20Africa.aspx , maker of Ritalin and Excedrin, to begin selling GW’s drug Sativex in markets across Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Middle East. The medication is already available in Britain, where it’s produced and marketed by Bayer, and in Canada and Spain. It’s on the market in those countries as a liquid that patients spray under the tongue and is prescribed primarily for sufferers of multiple sclerosis and cancer.

Sativex: Liquefied marijuana

If the name “Sativex” rings a distant bell, that’s because it’s derived from Cannabis sativa, the scientific name for the plant from which both hemp and marijuana are harvested. It’s an appropriate name because, unlike other cannabinoids produced for recreational and medicinal use (and plagued by side effects http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1374093/Thousands-treated-ER-frightening-symptoms-use-bath-salts-synthetic-marijuana-rockets.html?ito=feeds-newsxml not present in natural cannabinoids), Sativex is not a synthetic concoction, but essentially liquefied marijuana. It’s an extract of whole-plant cannabis http://www.drugdevelopment-technology.com/projects/sativex/ that includes the psychoactive agent THC as well as cannabidiol (CBD), the chemical thought to be responsible for some of the anti-nausea and cancer-cell-killing effects of medical marijuana.

snip

Early in Sativex’s development, GW hired Dr. Andrea Barthwell as a consultant to sing the drug’s praises http://www.globaldrugpolicy.org/1/1/2.php , although she’s no longer in the employ of GM. Barthwell was a deputy drug czar under George W. Bush http://www.linkedin.com/pub/andrea-barthwell/5/11b/354 and is the former president of the American Society for Addiction Medicine (ASAM). In a recent ASAM press release http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnw/20110323/pl_usnw/DC70683 , Barthwell denounced medical marijuana but — significantly — only because it was unregulated by the federal government.

3. I have to contain my contempt for those so close minded....
that they would refuse to acknowledge the strength of evidence that MMJ has its place as a primary adjunct therapy in cancer and other chronic disorders. And to think of penalizing the parents for obtaining it for their horrifically afflicted two year old just leaves me unable to express my dismay. I can only hope that the continued emergence of MMJ laws in states across the country will eventually move us from this regressive mindset.

I've seen some things on the internet about the oil (which requires quite a process) and have seen adults talk about it's benefits.

6. WAY TO GO DAD!!
Our Cannabis Laws make me sick! This man was very lucky he live where he does! I am so happy for him & his son!! I have tears in my eyes!

This is very personal to me!

I live in Georgia & I have extreme Neuropathic Pain from my chest to my toes on just the left side on my body...It literally splits me in half including through my crotch! If you don't know what Neuropathic Pain is well it is due to damage to nerves & can happen many different ways from Diabetes to Spinal Cord Injury which is how I ended up with it...The cost of being a quadriplegic with limited ability to walk. To know what it feels like think of a time when you had a cut that got infected how sensitive the area around the cut was. Now imagine that from your chest to your toes including the most sensitive areas on your body. It will flare up when the temp changes, barometric pressure changes, on windy days, in the sun, if you get a chill & any stimulation or direct touch is very uncomfortable...Must stay very still with very soft tight fitting clothes.

For relief I was going through various drug trials & other very painful & very costly procedures too many to list...This all stopped when my insurance dropped me when there were two other very promising things I had not tried.

So, now I am on a very expensive oral drug that does help. However, I tried Cannabis & it was amazing how well it worked! Granted it only worked for about an hour at a time but IT WORKED! However, my state says they will jail me if I am caught with it. I would have to have someone grow it for me to have the good stuff on a regular basis but in the state of Georgia that is a crime that could put one in jail for potentially decades!

Anyway, it is what it is so I am forced to buy very expensive pharmaceuticals that right now I get free from Pfizer...I applied twice for this program prior to the Health Care debate but after it started & right about the time Obama made the deal with the drug companies i KNOW Pfizer changed their policy. I can't speak for any other company but Pfizer.

I am not defending or even praising them as I know there are plenty of people who's income exceeds $1500 who are left to suffer! I am just describing what happened.

...I may be an Atheist but I know what Christ taught & for a country where most of its citizens claim it is a Christian country all I can do is LAUGH at the hypocrisy...Especially because the loudest voices claiming America is a Christian Nation are the same folks who would lock me up for decades if I grew my own medicine! Which by the way is an herb that the Bible says God gave to us to use!

King James Bible Gen 9:3
Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.

32. Small fiber sensory neuropathy
I can relate! I have a rare form of neuropathy that affects me from the knees down and makes walking extremely painful and sleep only lasts until the pills wear off. The doctors have tried every pill in their arsenal but they soon stop working well or I have been allergic. The pain was so bad I let them implant a neural stimulator into my spine (battery was included) which helps at times but you cannot let it run all of the time. Unless you suffer from chronic pain, you have no idea what it is like to go through life with moderate to severe pain 24 hours a day for a life sentence!!! I tried pot (again, college was a long time ago) and it was amazing! Evenings are the most painful times, but that is when I can now take my "medicine!" Here in Texas, the most repressed state in the Union, I would be executed by lethal injection were I to be caught (how do you think we execute so many of our citizens)! I dare them to arrest me for possession. I would make a media circus out of it. For all of you doubters out there, just ask your friends. There will be some honest ones that will admit to smoking pot and can testify as to its pain killing properties. My pain management doctor, who is also a neurologist, said it "puts the user in a dis-associative state much like narcotics." I could not tell him that I was using it because I do not know where he stands in this debate, but that was his honest answer.

EVERYONE SHOULD JUST USE IT FOR MODERATE TO SEVERE PAIN AND KEEP THE FIGHT ALIVE! WRITE YOUR LEADERSHIP (unless you are in Texas where you will have to vote all of the damn greedy, corrupt, lying, jealous, racists, small minded sum bitches out of office and start over)!!!!

35. Sorry to hear about your situation it sounds...
like you are in the same shitty boat as me. I did the trial for the spinal stimulator but it actually aggrivated my pain. Well, it covered it up very well on my stomach & thigh to my ankle but it was hell on my crotch! LOL! And then when I turned the stimulator off "IT F'ING HURT!!"

Then I tried at the time a new drug called Prialt that is administered via intrathecal infusion or catheter in my spinal column...It seem to work a little but about 8 days into the 10 day trial the catheter broke while I was sleeping & spinal fluid began to leak out...Talk about the worst head ache I have EVER had! I had to go to the emergency room to have the entire thing removed. Just a few weeks after that my insurance canceled me so i never got to try it again!

I think it would cost me around $6,000 to try again through Medicare & I simply can't afford that. If I could try again at a cheaper price I would even though the drug Prialt makes you very sick for the first couple of days. They make the drug from the venom of a cone snail from the Great Barrier Reef! CRAZY, huh?

You live in Texas & I live in Georgia the two states that compete to see who can kill the most prisoners! Your state has the lead! SAD, huh?

I have literally been in my bed for almost 7 years! I just turned 40 & I wonder if this is where I will spend the rest of my life? However, I know I am not suppose to think like that but considering all I have is time to think it is hard not to think that sometimes.

I do go out to eat sushi with my brother once a month when he is off & I am feeling up to it...I have a very caring wife who is sticking with me as well. Well, legally she is no longer my wife because we were forced to get a divorce because her $29K a year job was too much money for me to apply for emergency help via Medicare & other programs after my insurance dropped me! INSANE!

Well, I will stop rambling...I guess I felt like I could share some of my thoughts with you considering we know firsthand what each other is dealing with.

I wish you all the best in trying to stay as comfortable as possible...Anytime you want to talk feel free to PM me. Take care!

My name is AJ.

than so much of the get-rich money making pharmaceutical pills, "medication" expensive treatment and garbage that doctors will prescribe to anyone (since many are also making big money prescribing addictive-trash chemicals from the huge pharmaceutical companies)...The AMA will prescribe anything for patients if they get a piece of the action (billions of dollars) No matter how addicting bad for the body or even if the prescribed garbage works or not.

My ONLY advice....to all who need and prescribed medical weed for illness (or relaxing pleasure) make sure it's ORGANICALLY grown as many of us do here in Humboldt County (NO pesticides, no insecticides, no chemical soil or soil additives and no chemical "nutrients" when feeding & watering). I also prefer natural sunlight (not artificial lights).

It's harder to grow, one needs a bit more expertise and it's more expensive to grow - but organically is the ONLY way to use medical marijuana or even just to enjoy & the finely cured organic weed than killer addicting drugs and ALCOHOL.....Hang-overs are telling you & your body you just poisoned the shit out of yourself the night before.....But it's legal - what a joke!!

34. Great story. I recall a 60 Minutes segment YEARS ago about a doctor and his child suffering ...
... from brain cancer and its treatment. The child was a little older, IIRC.

Same deal. The kid was miserable and wouldn't eat anything. The doctor/father was at his wit's end. After the doctor/father gave the kid marijuana, they stopped on the way home from treatment for a milkshake (IIRC).

Why are we still discussing this as "controversial"?
