Most people agree that OBL was not put on trial because he "knew too much." In a Democracy, we are entitled (you must hate that word) to know AT LEAST as much as our "enemy" knows.

That is the whole problem, most Americans do not understand "WHY." Why we have so many enemies, why their numbers grow exponentially every day...etc..

Americans deserve to hear the reasons (from an enemy preferably) so that they can decide if our current foreign policy is worth following and are aware of the consequences. It is not all up to the politicians. they(are supposed to/used to) work for us. Ultimately it is the poor and average Americans who suffer and sacrifice for (IMO) this twisted policy we maintain. It is not the children of the wealthy/elite or the politicians (most of whom are in the first group...wealthy/elite) who die and or are permanently damaged in pursuit of this policy. Yes, the troops are great and they deserve much better.

Most of them, after returning from war, realize this and are against war and especially the "for profit" reason we are involved. I hope you never have to go to war (yes, economically, they HAVE to go to war). I wish that no one would ever have to go to war, except maybe the greedy bastards who start it.

Your point about Servicemen "getting it" once they come back may be statistically erroneous. I saw a Army Recruiter at his bench outside the local supermarket last summer. I gave him a buck and said "Thanks for your service. I'm sorry you all had to go to Iraq for a lie". He said "We had to take care of the people responsible for 9-11."

It leads me to question how much our servicemen do end up understanding about American foreign Policy (or historical accuracy) after they come home?

I think this is most classic "cognitive dissonance" for them. They can't accept in their brains they fought for bullshit!

It's my contention that America has already turned into a full blown totalitarian police state. It's just that "the Powers that Be" are still very selective and restrained about which "enemies of the state" they choose to ruin or murder.

Like Spitzer about to come down on Wall Street. Using the "total information awareness" capability made into law with the un-American Patriot Act, our government can "get the goods" on anybody that becomes threatening, and do their best to ruin them.

I read his column religiously each Monday. He's one of the few who actually speak the truth the state of the once-great nation. I would disagree with his contention that standing in the rain in Madison is going to accomplish something. It won't.

but I try to give Hedges a few points for hanging on something that I've given up on.. faith in the American Citzenry to recognize what the hell is going on, and a willingness to take action against TPB.
