Jared Bernstein: Cantor's Behavior "Profoundly Irresponsible And Reckless." Isn't That What Republicans Do?
By Susie Madrak

http://crooksandliars.com/susie-madrak/jared-bernstein-cantors-behavior-prof

Former White House adviser Jared Bernstein is, of course, an economist and thinks in terms of what makes sense, and good policy. But that's not exactly the game we're playing here, is it?

A journalist just asked me what I thought of Eric Cantor abandoning the budget talks because the Democrats are insisting that the deal include both spending cuts and revenue increases.

I’ve been around this town awhile. I could easily slip into the cynical Washington insider mode and write off this kind of political theater as strategy or posturing. But not this time.

***

Anyone walking away from that table needs to take a hard look at the extent of economic hardship facing American families right now and ask yourself why prolonging that pain is worth the political leverage you gain from it.The time for such game playing is long past. Stop screwing around, cut the deal, and raise the debt ceiling.

1. The budget talks must include taxing the rich and cutting defense spending.
If they do not do that, then they are not serious about deficit reduction.

2. That's where the challenge of...
..."ask yourself why prolonging that pain is worth the political leverage you gain from it" comes into play.

Because if the Republicans can derail efforts to tax the rich and keep the cuts alive, they will moist certainly gain "political leverage."

And the only ones who will admit that it's "worth it" are the honest ones. The rest will say that the cuts are necessary so that the wealthy will "create jobs," something they haven't done since this mess started.

3. Cantor- the face of party (and profits) first.
How disgusting. The majority of Americans KNOW that the wealthy and the corporations MUST be taxed if America is ever going to create jobs (and/or cutting the deficit which ranks way behind job creation) yet even if he acknowledges this (I thought he had), he won't help America because "they" are afraid it will help Obama.
There may be a time for politics, but it is not when America is in one of the worst economies ever.
