Sanders to Obama: Don't give in to GOP demands
WASHINGTON — Sen. Bernie Sanders urged President Barack Obama during a 90-minute Senate floor speech Monday to “stand tall” with most Americans and press for “shared sacrifice” as he enters talks with congressional leaders on deficit reduction.
The Vermont independent, revisiting themes from his marathon, 8-and-a-half hour speech in December, said the administration shouldn’t yield to Republican demands to exempt the wealthiest Americans and most profitable corporations from tax hikes while imposing “cruel” cuts in programs for the most vulnerable. A Senate Budget Committee member, Sanders wants new revenue to account for at least half of any deal on a deficit reduction package.
He urged anyone listening to him on C-SPAN2 to contact the White House directly or visit his website and sign a letter he wrote to Obama. As of Monday evening, more than 19,000 had signed the letter.
“It is time for President Obama to stand with the millions who have already lost their jobs, their homes, their life savings instead of the millionaires, who in many cases, have never had it so good,” Sanders said.

House Democrats feel jilted by the president in budget, debt talks“How is it that the House Democrats played such an important role , and all of a sudden , ‘Forget it, we’ll work with the Senate and the Republican leadership?’ ” asked Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), vice chairman of the Democrats’ Steering and Policy Committee.
Partly to temper mounting discontent, Obama called House Democrats to the White House on June 2, a day after meeting with House Republicans, to hear their concerns about the debt negotiations.
It was a tense encounter, according to several accounts.
One Democrat who was there said Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) bluntly asked Obama whether he was willing to fight for Democratic priorities amid GOP calls for trillions of dollars in spending cuts.
In asking the question, Waxman said he’d asked several Republicans about their White House meeting the day before and had been concerned by their response.
“To a person, they said the president’s going to cave,” Waxman told Obama, according to his colleague’s account.
