Celeste Ward Gventer, former deputy defense secretary and currently at University of Texas, discusses the president's announcement on troop withdrawals from Afghanistan.

Gventer said that the only way towards Afghan stability is US cooperation with international community and negotiations with elements of the Taliban. She also said that America's top interest should be preventing Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for terrorists.

This interview by Alison Stewart is from the June 24, 2011 edition of the PBS weekly program Need to Know, which is on most PBS stations on Fridays at 10PM Eastern/Pacific (9PM elsewhere).
