Wednesday, June 29, 2011 09:34 +0900 (JST)The Afghan government says all the Taliban insurgents who attacked a hotel in Kabul have been killed in a shootout with security forces. Afghan security officials say an armed group opened fire and suicide bombers blew themselves up on Tuesday night near the entrance of the Inter-Continental Hotel. The lodging is frequented by foreigners.
Security forces who were guarding the hotel returned fire, and the fierce gun battle lasted nearly 5 hours. An Afghan interior ministry spokesperson says all of the insurgents were killed. A Taliban spokesperson has told Reuters and other media that the group targeted and attacked the hotel.
The violence occurred about a week after US President Obama announced that the United States plans to withdraw 33,000 troops from Afghanistan by September 2012. Security in Afghanistan is showing no signs of improving, with the Taliban stepping up bombings and terrorist attacks across the country, even in the heavily guarded capital.
