2. I recced it back up to +1. There's always an unrec at the beginning
of any thread about the President. At least one.

It sounds to me like those in the room with President Obama were pleased with what he said. I wasn't there. I'm not part of the group that was there. I'll take their word for their approval of the President.

I'll also continue to work for full equality in all areas for my LGBT friends and everyone else. That's what I can do.

President Obama says gay marriage should be left up to the states. If inner racial marriage were left up to the states it never would have happened. If blacks having civil rights were left up to the states it most likely would never have happened. If women's rights to vote were left up to states it may not have happened. The Bill of Rights was written to protect the minority against the tyranny of the majority. Gay marriage must be recognized on a federal level because gay people will NEVER have equal rights until that happens.

5. Yes, it is wrong. But, there's not really anything
a President can do about that one. Since the Constitution doesn't mention marriage and since marriage has been a state function since always, a President has nothing to do about it. Congress can make the federal government recognize same sex marriage, but that's unlikely with the current Congress. Obama's position on this is not the right one. No question about it. But, his position on it makes no real difference in what can happen. Deciding not to defend DOMA, however, indicates that he's on board with getting rid of the federal discrimination regarding this. That's the important thing. The rest is up to Congress or the courts. President Obama will sign any bill that provides marriage equality or advances that.
