Given last nights Maddow segment on tax havens, I thought it would be good to show you how the plutocratic elites of the country (or the "Economic Royalists" as Al Gore and FDR called them) view the practice of avoiding paying taxes by stashing your money in the Bahamas, or in Switzerland instead of giving it to the "thieves" at the IRS.

For your amusement, here is a series of videos from the Koch-funded Cato Institute explaining why it's actually MORAL to live in the United States, benefit from all the services, rights and freedoms provided by the government of the United States, while allowing the people you employ to scrub your floors, clean your toilets and polish your golf clubs to pay for it all on your behalf.

The first video (above) explains why tax havens are actually MORAL. (Basically...gubmint is bad, taxation is theft by "statists" etc. you know the drill.)

Why tax havens are moral:

Then we move on to the ECONOMIC reasons why tax havens are good. Basically, they're great because they put "competitive downward pressure" on countries to keep their taxes low by providing low-tax competition. Sort of the same way car thieves put competitive pressure on the automotive industry to keep the price of cars low by selling stolen cars at a lower price than you can buy them from a dealer. But hey...competition is GOOD, right? Adam Smith SAID SO!

The case for tax havens making good "economic" sense.

And finally, their video on myths and facts about tax havens:

I tell you, if you look at the number of libertarian geeks who are eating this stuff up, you have to think that funding the Cato Institute was the best investment the Koch brothers ever made.

2. I only WISH Soros had their kind of scratch to spread around and buy political influence
Edited on Thu Jun-30-11 08:00 PM by TrollBuster9090
When Soros can snap his fingers, and get half the Democratic governors to fly in from all around the country to attend a semi-secret strategy session with him the way the Koch boys just did, then I'll believe he's the liberal version of the Koch brothers.

Mind you, I have to say that they're getting a disproportionate amount of media attention just because they're easy targets. They're obviously not working hard enough to launder their money, and hide their influence. Softly softly cathee monkey!

3. Seriously?
Worried about Libertarians? Libertarians are no threat unless Steve Lerner is successful in his Fox-Piven scheme.

4. Gosh...some of my best FRIENDS are libertarians.
I LOVE libertarians. REAL ones, anyway. Sure they tend to be a little verbose now and then, and love hyperbole. But I love them!
Especially when they make noises about making an honest attempt at electing a viable third party, which they've done once or twice in targeted areas.

No, I have no problems with libertarians. Plutocratic oligarchs parading around in libertarian clothing, on the other hand, are a different thing.

5. Whine whine whine,,,,,
His voice went up an octave and he went into hyperboly when he had no facts to back it up.

Besides, the USA does not have the corruption level of some countries I have visited, so that reason is so bogus. I will stop picking his facts apart and just call a whambulance.

6. Just how big a "fail" is this "protect from oppressive government" argument?
Edited on Sat Jul-02-11 10:30 AM by JHB
The people in those places who can make use of tax haves are the ones doing the oppressing. They use the offshore havens to stash what they've looted from their country.

8. I still don't get
and granted I didn't watch the whole video, what does Robert Mugabe or Hugo Chavez have to do with rich Americans avoiding taxes?
