1. Al Jolson was from a generation that practiced community spirit & celebrated sacrifice.
When the country went to war back then, everybody pitched in. When peace came, they remembered working side by side and that shaped their sense of nationhood, even among the wealthy & powerful. Today, the one thing that unites the wealthy & powerful is the understanding that "everyone pull together" is something the saps believe.
