Hosted by Ana Kasparian and Jayar Jackson of The Young Turks, http://www.youtube.com/tytuniversity|TYT University> focuses on college students and related issues (tuition, finding a job, dating, parties, religion, campus controversy and everything in between). We're looking for students, faculty members and recent graduates struggling to find work to submit videos from across the globe that might be used on the show each week.

Summary: Two Religion professors at Calvin College in Michigan are in hot water over a scholarly article they wrote on genetics and evolution and how it made them question the literal interpretation of Genesis in the Bible, Adam and Eve, etc. Ana Kasparian and Jayar Jackson discuss. 2. More than I would ever have believed possible.
There seems to be a terrible defect in the way our brains work and some have learned how to exploit it to great advantage.

fostered by both religious and secular right wing extremists .

If we examine the rhetoric we hear from right leaning callers on a talk show or right leaning posters on an internet blog, it is clear that their notions are completely out of touch with reality. It's easy to find the source of their ignorance because it comes from the mouths of right wing pundits more or less continuously.

Do we really need to say it? I will. They are destroying the nation right before our eyes.

6. "Thou shalt worship no other gods before Me..."
What about afterward? Is it cool to worship Moloch, Amon Ra, Wotan, Isis, Elvis, etc., as long as they wait their turn?

Hmmmn...

7. heh. It makes more sense to worship Elvis than Yahweh.
At least there's some evidence that Elvis might have been real; can't say that for Yahweh.

12. I do not see any reason why science and religion can not work hand-in-hand.
Because they directly contradict each other, fight for $$$ and resources and one is about reason and reality, and the other is about power and $$$$ through fear and guilt.

One is also incredibly successful and has been concretely helpful to many many people of all stripes, improving the quality of life.

The other is religion.

4. Calvin College is obviously a fraudulent place.
Edited on Thu Aug-18-11 06:45 PM by provis99
No learning going on there, if they want their professors to teach lies and fundamentalist propaganda. I hope they aren't accredited.

Anna is exactly right; fundamentalists push against this type of factual stuff because deep down, they know the Bible is bullshit, too. But they are fascist and authoritarian in their mindset, and would rather push lies to control people than deal with reality and be forced to lose that control over people's thoughts.

10. Indeed! What makes it a "college"? What "scholarship"?
It's just a church and cult.

I mean, c'mon.... You have to look into genetics to figure out Genesis is a myth? The talking snake with legs didn't give that away? I knew it wasn't literal at age 6.

The "professors" have indeed outgrown this cult's juvenile creed. The biggest threat to the "college" is reality. Being cast out of the fold is
something these "professors" should already have studied and know about. Now they're experiencing it 1st hand. They should not be surprised or upset.

The real problem here is that they call such places "Colleges" and "Universities" and they are treated as such.

8. Well, it depends...
If Calvin College is an accredited college, they can be sued for discrimination. However, if it is a private college and non-accredited, then firing the professors is within their rights. (It may be stupid, but it's within their rights.)

All religions are just ancient governments.

14. Well, you could look at it this way. Just four hundred years ago they would have been tortured
or killed. So I guess that's progress, in some small way. Of course, one hundred years ago their position would have been a given.

Oh well. At least they woke up, so that means others can too.
