" United States Marine Corps. Sgt. Shamar Thomas from Roosevelt, NY went toe to toe with the New York Police Department. An activist in the Occupy Wall Street movement, Thomas voiced his opinions of the NYPD police brutality that had and has been plaguing the #OWS movement.

Thomas is a 24-year-old Marine Veteran (2 tours in Iraq), he currently plays amateur football and is in college.

Thomas comes from a long line of people who sacrifice for their country: Mother, Army Veteran (Iraq), Step father, Army, active duty (Afghanistan), Grand father, Air Force veteran (Vietnam), Great Grand Father Navy veteran (World War II).

10. Plus you have the mostly higher rank vets who fall for this right-wing garbage.
I can attest to that myself. One time I was at the MCB Kaneohe Bay chow hall, and lo-and-behold they had all of the TVs on Faux News while I was eating. Then some random 1stSgt. said to us "FOX NEWS IS REAL NEWS!" or whatever. Plus I met another SNCO at MCAS Yuma telling us how ACLU are communists and blah blah blah.

And we all know how many generals fall for this BS as well.

5. This made me cry....
The passion, integrity and honor in the Marine, and the youthful faces of the police officers.

All of it is so very sad, and so unnecessary.

The people who have made the decisions behind the scenes for decades, essentially enslaving our population (though half don't even realize it), creating wars for profit, raping the Earth for profit, raping us for profit...are less than human.

106. I felt the same way OGR
I have a feeling that many of the cops agree with him, or will definitely think about what he said. I blame the top brass in the NYPD, and of course Bloomberg who is a bully and always was. He thinks, because he's rich, that people should do as he tells them, and if they don't, he uses the police to force them to. He has truly destroyed the rep. of the NYPD around the world, and of course his own, not that either of them ever had much of a reputation to those who knew them.

While it was an incredibly moving moment to watch, and a victory for the people, it was also sad.

I will say this though, if they were not aware of how many cameras were there, he might not have walked away they way he did. Many people have been shot by the NYPD for far less than what he did. I think for once, those in charge were smarter than those who have been beating and pepper-spraying the people.

He expressed the outrage I feel when I see them treating the American people as if they were the enemy. How did we ever get to the point where this became acceptable?

115. signing on to the crier's list
I just cried me a river as I watched this: for the courage of the Marine, for the state of affairs that brought us to this.

On the expressions of the police, I could see he hit home. Several of them were bewildered, others--I could see they knew what he was saying.

He may not have seen an immediate understanding from the police, but they will think about this. And then think about the impact that 30 police who have seen this will have.

121. He is indeed a hero. What really struck me was that one man could
take total control of 30. Notice how the white shirts were trying to reassert control and were ignored? They were frantic. Their men had a new leader - one they respected. I wonder if any badges were turned in so that they did not have to repeat the cowardice that has been happening since the beginning. This man knows how to lead.

I am so proud of him. Shamar Thomas = honor.

May there be many more just like him to lead us in this clean up of our nation.

23. I especially
Loved the point he kept making that there was no honor in the cops actions. But then it's been my experience that most people don't become cops out of a sense of honor.Very few people join the military out of a sense of honor, either. This Sergeant might be an exception. We need him to team up with the veterans who told Shun Sannity of Fux noise to fuck off and called him a POS, which is of course undeniably true.

This is the stuff the 1% are REALLY afraid of. Because it shows which side REALLY has the honor and values and everything else that the rich claim to have dominion over.

If all the amazing stories of OWS like these were being shown, this painfully obvious TRUTH would be out there. As it is, its gonna take more time.

I'd like to send him in to a few Wall Street offices, too.

Can you imagine him shaming people like Henry Paulson, who bet against the housing market and made a skazillion off people losing their homes?

He DEFINITELY got the attention of the higher up lickspittles of the elite.

They really have no clue what to do about all the cell phone cameras and video devices. Makes it tough to be a "big, bad, tough guy" cop when you know that all the world will be watching you rough up unarmed, peacefully assembling citizens.

Just think what would have happened in Iraq and Afghanistan if all soldiers were like him. We would have won those hearts and minds in no time. And we would be home now.

33. MORE. Here's what Shamar Thomas has also posted

On his YouTube channel (in the About Me section), where the video of the speech is posted, he writes:

"I took an Oath that I live by. am NOT anti-NYPD. I am anti- Police Brutality. I am no longer under contract with the USMC so I do NOT have to follow military uniform regulations. I DON'T affiliate myself with ANY GROUPS or POLITICAL ORG. I affiliate myself with the AMERICAN PEOPLE that's it. I REFUSE to affiliate with anything that SEPARATES. There is an obvious problem in the country and PEACEFUL PEOPLE should be allowed to PROTEST without Brutality. I was involved in a RIOT in Rutbah, Iraq 2004 and we did NOT treat the Iraqi citizens like they are treating the unarmed civilians in our OWN Country. No one was brutalized because our mission was to 'WIN the hearts and minds.' why should I expect anything less in my OWN Country."

kudos for the Heroic veteran, but since nobody in this thread even mentioned it, am I the only one who finds this 'go beat Iraqis instead' gross?

What in the world have Iraqis ever done wrong to us to deserve getting 'beaten' (in Honor???)?

When did any Iraqi citizen ever even threaten the 'good ole' U.S. of A.?????

Although I understand the context of emergency in the vid, I do not agree with this 'Iraqis deserve to get beaten instead of American citizens' there.

Edited on Tue Oct-18-11 11:58 AM by Amonester
"there is no Honor in this"

"if you want to fight people, go to Iraq and Afghanistan"

If I equaled this to 'beating up people in Iraq' and 'with Honor' well, maybe Iraqis and Afghanis will if they watch it on Al Jazeera... no?

If they do then I hope they won't be offended... (I would be outraged, but maybe it's only me.)

On edit: Did I say F the neocon$? Then F cheney/bu$h/rum$feratu & co.

133. There's no context to even get such an impression. In fact, it's the OPPOSITE.

He said that during protests in Iraq, American troops treated Iraqis better than the NYPD treated Americans.

When he said that if they wanted a fight, they should go to Iraq, he was directly and quite obviously referring to combat activities, not 'beating up civilians'.

How you would get something like that out of what he said is very interesting. I'd urge introspection to try to figure out what actual cues you relied on to come to that conclusion. So far, no such cues exist in his words without deliberate misconstruction. So it was something outside of his words that caused you to hear that.

What do you figure that might be?

Oh, and why the need to try to establish 'anti-wingnut' bona fides? Do you know something I don't or were you trying to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLSlGmVrmuM">accomplish something else? ;)

43.  K&R This should be on the Greatest Page
hope it gets enough votes. Things turned quickly chaotic in Times Square yesterday. I am so grateful for this man. I get so discouraged sometimes when I come to DU and see posts criticizing OWS, like its all up to the protesters to change everything for everyone else. They aren't sticking to the staus quo, they are trying to bring about real change. It's a new movement and it's catching on, but it needs support. If for nothing else, OWS has given a voice to the people, so long ignored by politicians of both parties. Everyone needs to do their part to hold politicians accountable. Politicians are the ones that should be wondering what they are going to do next. Are they going to listen & take action or is is it going to be more talk and "we need you around election time, after that, don't call me, I'll call you" Look at the actions of this one man. This is what courage looks like. It took a lot of guts to stand up to the cops the way he did. This is what standing up for what you believe in, looks like. He embarrassed them. This is what a real hero looks like. Love you Sgt Thomas, my fellow New Yorker and thank you so much!

44. I have very mixed emotions....
I understand the veteran who was challenging authority. I also understand the position of the police in that they have families to feed, etc. that is dependent on a paycheck. That paycheck is dependent on following orders which is what we expect of police and the military. Hopefully the police will slowly realize that the protesters are on their side and that their fates rise and fall with those of the movement. Only then will the 1% realize their gated communities are no protection against the millions.

91. There is no need for mixed emotion.
Pepper spray deployed against nonviolent protestors does not feed their families. Nor does needless force in arresting protestors. There is no need for mixed emotion.

47. my take
This man of Honor did not "scare" the cops. These are the samecops thatwillingly went into the twin towers to save people and died trying. Their orders have come from those who would pervert the honor of these cops. I believe this Marine, judging from the look on the cops faces, got through to them, including the commannder, who pulled his men back. This was a triumph of Honor.

49. in the civil war
A true story- the wounded of both sides were strewn on a battlefield. Both sides had retreated behind their revetments. The screams and moans. Of the woundedand dying filled the air. A Union soldier could take no more. He ran onto the field and started tending the wounded. Some of the confederates started shooting, and their Commander cried "cease fire! Cease fire! That man is too brave to die". Something similar happened here. Just my take, please don't flameme ;-)

I'm unsure of what struck me more in this video.... Sgt. Shamer, or the LOOK on the faces of the NYPD. Have you EVER seen craziness come to an absolute halt in such fashion?

God, it makes me proud of him... so proud of someone who had to serve in the military in multiple tours, his whole family now faced with ... what kind of life after this... all brought to such a clear and concise moment of truth!

I love Sgt. Sharmar Thomas for honoring his oath of duty. He stood up to protect those who were unarmed & standing up peacefully for their human rights that are supposedly already protected by the Constitution but are not being honored by those unfaithful who are armed & have sold their souls to the devil.

114. I just hope he doesn't get in too much trouble over this
Unfortunately, since he is still a reservist the Marines can take some action against him for appearing at a protest wearing parts of the uniform. They can't do anything punitive like prosecute him under the UCMJ because he wasn't on duty but they can call an administrative board together and downgrade his "character of service" discharge. That's all they could do to Adam Kokesh when he was appearing at anti-war protests in some of his Marine uniform items.

If he has an honorable discharge they can downgrade it to a general like they did to Kokesh. That mainly hurts some future job prospects like government jobs and if he is going to college with his GI Bill he could lose that also if he gets downgraded from honorable.

A hobby related internet board I browse has a bunch of current and prior military on it. They had a thread over there that eventually got deleted but some of them had already looked his information up and had contacted and forwarded links/copies of the video to his Marine reserve command to make them aware.

I hope he comes through it unscathed but the military has specific rules and guidelines about appearing at events and protests in uniform. Hopefully they determine it's not worth the bad press to harm him like they did Kokesh.

125. Let’s hope that the Marine Corps leaves this Marine alone ...
There are a lot of former Marines (and active duty) who share his position. We swore and oath of enlistment to ‘protect and defend the Constitution against foreign and domestic enemies’ and I just believe the real enemy to the US Constitution lies with banksters, corporate amerika and their political whores. There is no statue of limitation on the enlistment oath!

There are a lot of ‘john wayne’ types in the military community ... so be it. I was once at a voting poll wearing Veterans for Peace button with my Marine cover and some retired Army type called me a GAW DAMN Communist. Can’t change them but I can use my brain housing group and not follow the American flag when America is wrong.
