1. 1000 think tank-coordinated radio stations reaching 50 mil/week is why we're in this disaster
creating made-to-order procorporate constituencies to swiftboat any progressives and support any fascist sycophant and to intimidate and feed the media and message over anything progressives make headway on. and it only worked because the left ignores it. democracy was making slow progress against the big money- it's always been there, but the last 20 years have been completely irrational, with team limbaugh and the think tanks that manage them, with fox adding the visuals, made the difference allowing the right to short circuit eh feedback mechanisms a democracy depends on.
like many progressives analyzing this problem thom doesn't have time to monitor talk radio and there's no comprehensive transcript database to know what they're saying and how often, to be able to monitor the trends anyway. at least randi rhodes has it figured out how instrumental talk radio has been.

4. I have always believed that if we REINSTATE THE FAIRNESS
DOCTRINE, it would have a major effect on corruption and fraud by corporate owned government. The media would be forced to report on these things honestly and if they gave commentaries they would have to provide air-time for opposing viewpoints. That is why Reagan stopped the Fairness Doctrine and why Obama recently, totally erased it's history from the official FCC archives.

5. i don't think we can wait for a new fairness doctrine, even if it was the answer. for one thing
too many on the left have been brainwashed into thinking the talk radio monopoly is some form of free speech that needs to be protected.

IMO the way to fix it is to recognize the individual radio stations are the problem and their local sponsors and the universities that endorse them by broadcasting sports on them need to be shamed for the racism, sexis, and global warming denial till the only sponsors left will defend the limbaughs- and that won't be many in most communities.

3. the american dream
Was always a nifty way for the 1% to get immigrants to come 'build up' the land they stole from the Indians. It's been bogus from the beginning, a Madison ave. trick.
