The Energy companies are once again trying site to more Liquefied Natural Gas Terminals along the Pacific Coast. Liquefied Natural Gas is a foreign fossil fuel supercooled and shipped across the ocean in 14 story high, 3 football fields long supertankers, contributing massive amounts of green house gases to the planet’s atmosphere.
After having the Community’s complete defeat of mining conglomerate BHP Billiton’s four year multi-million dollar effort to place a LNG terminal off Oxnard-Malibu, Northern Star Corporation proposes a similarly dangerous and dirty LNG terminal off the Ventura County coast, called Clearwater Port, which threatens the people and the environment of California. This was put out by the NO LNG Community Alliance of Ventura County

1. As I recall, that waterway has some really bad currents
Saw a 300+ foot long ship on its side on the beach in Oxnard... wind and current. Fortunately, that one was empty.

So, the reason they don't want to put it at the Port of Los Angles is...? Could it be that it is just too damned dangerous to place in a big urban center? So, go up a but to a medium urban center. Oh, and it is a whale migratory path by the way.

2. Not sure but this is one of the consequences of large shipping here
3rd dead blue whale seen floating off coast

The mammal is expected to wash ashore today in Ventura County, the second there in a week.

Another dead blue whale was floating toward shore Thursday in the Santa Barbara Channel, as puzzled experts try to determine why at least three of the huge mammals have died off the Southern California coast in less than two weeks.

Tracked by government aircraft, the 60-foot blue whale -- a member of the largest species on Earth -- was drifting toward the Ventura County coast and was expected to wash ashore sometime today.

Scientists said they didn't know where it would land. Last week, a dead blue whale beached about 10 miles up the coast from Ventura and another was found in Long Beach Harbor before being towed out to sea.

Joe Cordaro, a wildlife biologist with the National Marine Fisheries Service, said he couldn't recall a similar spate of blue whale deaths off California or anywhere else.

"There's something a little different going on right now," he said, "and we don't know what it is."

The latest blue whale was spotted Wednesday afternoon by Derek Lee, a vacationing marine biologist who was sailing to Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard after a few days off Santa Cruz Island.

"We got 50 feet away from it, took pictures and rounded it twice," said Lee, who works in Northern California's Farallon National Wildlife Refuge. "It was floating belly up, freshly dead and intact."

Lee phoned Cordaro, who alerted scientists in the region's Marine Mammal Stranding Network, a group of experts from marine institutes, government agencies and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

After the whale beaches today, biologists will begin the elaborate process of determining a cause of death.

The whale that washed ashore last week had numerous broken bones, suggesting it was hit by a ship in one of the Santa Barbara Channel's busy shipping lanes.

3. I am sure, about the whales AND the currents/winds
Spend a few years living there, watching that channel. It is wicked.

4. In my small town on the southern coast of Oregon
We have been fighting a siting for a LNG terminal and the pipeline for over three years now.

Just this week, FERC gave the go ahead for land use to the LNG assholes. Our county commissioners (boo! hiss!), like the sheep they are, gave their stamp as well.

In case anyone is not aware, LNG is deadeye dick's baby. He began promoting it in the early 90's.

Besides the danger LNG brings to our ecosystem, our safety, our tourist industry and our pristine environment, not one drop of gas will be going to anyone in the state of Oregon. It will all go to California.

Yet, the pipeline takes a 95' swath of land on each property it runs through for 222 miles to the California/Oregon border. It's called eminent domain. In this case, eminent domain = taking land from the people and giving it to Big Oil.

When I began researching LNG, the 1st article I found was one that quoted Richard Clarke (the counter-terrorist dude):

Clarke wrote that in the hours after the 9/11 attacks, he instructed the Coast Guard to close Boston Harbor. He feared that an LNG tanker coming into Boston might be another terrorist target.

"Had one of the giant tankers blown up in the harbor," Clarke wrote, "it would have wiped out downtown Boston."

Thank you for posting this. I fear too many people are unaware that this is going on in our country, while our planet is dying.
