Dirty tricks to steal CA's vote--CAUGHT ON CAMERA!!
This tactic has the name of NATHAN SPROUL all over it.
MCM

Dear William,

We've caught the dirty tricksters on video.

As you know, California Counts -- a cabal of right-wing political operatives linked to Rudy Giuliani -- is working hard to steal the White House (again) in 2008. They want to fool California voters into changing the rules so Giuliani -- or some other regressive Republican presidential nominee -- can rob at least 20 Electoral College votes from California next November.

When Steven Attewell, an eagle-eyed member of the blog Daily Kos, alerted me that California Counts petition-gatherers at UC Santa Barbara were gathering signatures to help "children with cancer," I
headed out to investigate.

And, sure enough, when I looked carefully at what they wanted me to sign, I noticed that "children with cancer" was just a sneaky tactic to get people to sign the so-called "Electoral College Reform
Initiative" -- what we call the dirty trick initiative.

Now, Secretary of State Debra Bowen is considering whether to open an
investigation -- if enough of us come forward with stories like what
I saw at UCSB.

10. Name of the contractor? he is just some guy lookin for work,. WHO HIRED THEM?!?
anyone in California should jump on this, and do some looking into it,. find out who hired private contractors (god these guys love private contractors) to push redistricting,. and then news release to all major media. That sure does look like a 'odd' operation; millions for children that are sick, stop the government from stealing your home,. save the puppies? AND, 'oh this last one' after you already have the pen in your hand and have just signed twice, is to redistrict California so the repugs got a better shot,. like we did in texas! devious, you gota love the capacity of the human mined to come up with sht like this, . if only we could use these people for good,. as apposed to evil!

16. Even the Dems use private Contractors....
I have been a petitioner and there are companies that do this, for both sides of the coin. They get paid by the campaign, you get paid per signatures by the contractor. Some pay more, some pay less. Voeter registration pays less than that.

So this is not really bait and switch, these guys are paid to gather singauters and don't care as long as people sign them. I am sure the cancer one pays more.

17. People need to read what they sign and know the implications of the issue.
Reeling folks in with "children's cancer", is cynical, sneaky, and typical of Republican disrespect for the voter.

18. My Usually Savvy Coworker Signed It
because they told her it would end the electoral system and result in all votes being counted. I almost choked when she told me that. Good grief people, quit signing petitions in public. Go home and study the issue first!!

22. The Initiative system was once a reform, but it has been corrupted
There have been occasional calls to introduce it in Minnesota, but I would want the following safeguards:

1. No paid petition gatherers, PERIOD. If an initiative can't find volunteer signature gatherers, then it's not really "the voice of the people." Most of the initiatives presented in Oregon were crazy notions by crackpot millionaires, mostly gained at lowering their taxes or expenses, and they'd hire petition gatherers who would then outright LIE to get people to sign.

2. Anyone presenting a petition that would require the state to spend money or lose a revenue source must detail how it will be paid for, either by a new tax or fee or by cutting something else. Successful initiatives in Oregon left the state legislature with a lot of unfunded mandates.

23. You know, I like that idea about
no paid ones. In fact I wish that was law for those who lobby congress for bills and stuff, imagine if corporations could not pay their people to get the laws they want passed and or crush laws they dont want passed.

When you find one of these people and you've verified that they are deceiving people. Tell 'em what a great job they're doing and buy them a beverage with some phenolphthalein.

Refreshing!

Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 11:40 PM by Cobalt-60
Tell Campus security or local police that they're defrauding signatures.
If they won't help, press the attack anyway.
Post signs around them stating what they're trying to get sigs for
Surround them and inform everyone who approaches what's up.
Get on camera interviews with people who did sign and ask them what they thought they were signing.
We can't be afraid to fight the fascists.

27. Heres one annoint them with liquor
For a table based collector pout some cheap booze (maybe soured wine, I hate wasting good booze) on the ground around them.
Foot patrol gets splashed with it.
If they whiff strongly of liquor it will put people off.
OFC Urine is pretty offensive too....
